Anyone Know What Happened to Telefunken Graphite Picks?
« on: December 31, 2023, 11:07:36 AM »
I’ve been using the black Telefunken 1.6 mm triangle graphite enriched delrin picks ever since Hieronymous gave me one a few years ago.  Yesterday I tried to order some more and couldn’t find them anywhere.  Even a search of the Telefunken web site reveals not even a mention of these picks!    Does anyone know what happened?  It’s as if they’ve not only been discontinued, but have been subjected to cancel culture!   And, more importantly, does anyone know where I can still get some?

HELP!

The first linked picks are 2 mm thick, quite a bit thicker than the 1.6 I’m looking for.

The second link is for their non-graphite picks.

I don’t know what happened to Telefunken, and these are nylon not graphite, but I’ve been using them since the 70s and like them (Herco flex 75 heavy)…

Here are a couple of sources for Telefunkin graphite enriched Delrin 1.6 mm picks…

https://avlgear.com/product/telefunken-1-6mm-triangle-delrin-guitar-picks-white-6-pack/?srsltid=AfmBOoqkSiYQpyywM3hZYnBLckmiLEvD4l2FB3IlnxjKWvsE5h8dmcU_eg8

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/885170-REG/Telefunken_1_6mm_triangle_Circle_Grip_3mm_Delrin.html

The first link is to the white Delrin picks, no graphite.   The BH Photo link says they are discontinued.  Still looking.

Oh no! That's bad news Bill. I guess I need to be more careful with my last order and not lose track of them! At least they have three points so should last a while...

Never came across the Telefunken ones (didn't even know they made anything except mics - and, according to the jolly lads who set up Zappa's PA system, marital aids....)

When I worked for (oh, the shame of it!) Guitar Center in '83-'84 I fell in love with Modulus picks; thinner than a Fender medium, stiffer than a purple Tortex.  Last thing I did upon being given the boot was (they, woe is me, having just been discontinued) grab a dozen - which were, alas, scattered by my children decades ago.

A few years back (OK, maybe more than a few.....) I was able to procure 6 Adamas ones from a club member (Edwin, maybe?).  They're 2mm, which is thicker than the Modulus ones I loved - but still better than any production plectrum I've tried.  I don't let my kids (now middle-aged men) anywhere near them - not even the one picker in the lot!

And I did specify "production"; my 2 favs (and I think I may have had you try these ones, Bill) are a glass pick given me by the eldest, and from the youngest, one carved from 50,000-y-o fossilized walrus ivory.

Let us know if you find either a source or a substitute; even fingerpickers need a new flatpick every now and again.

You can still get the Adamas 2 mm Graphite picks from Dunlop.   Those are the ones Jerry used.  I did order today a  starter pack of three different kinds of Acoustik Attak picks.  I also sent an email to Telefunken inquiring about the situation.

I pinged Jason Scheuner, keeper of Osiris, who as I recall has a role at Telefunken, to see if he has any scoop on future availability.  I have given a bunch away at gigs to folks searching for the sound.  Hope I don't have to hoard the ones I have left 'cause they are the best!

I did not know that, so I hopped over to the Dunlop site.  Not one mention of them.  But Googling "Adamas picks" I get ten gazzilion hits on people selling them.

Strange.

I can totally understand and respect folks being completely loyal to exactly one pick. I get it. Been using the same two for years, guitar and mandolin respectively.

That said, Golden Gate makes a very nice selection in varying stiffness/thickness/shapes now. I keep an MP-40 in my billfold, for test-driving guitars.

Golden Gate does make some nice picks, especially for Mandolin/ezouk!  I will pick up an MP-40 next time I see one and give it a spin.  My other go-to big triangle, if I don't have a Telefunken in my pocket, is the Clayton 1.52mm Acetal.  Perhaps even a wee bit stiffer than the Telefunken, very solid and easy to grip, but has a smooth action against the string, even if a roundwound.  V-Picks have some nice acrylic picks as well, though they to me are a bit slippery in hand.

I received an email from Telefunken today.  They have a couple of packs of B stock picks they are selling me!  Yea!   They also said they do intend to re-release these picks as soon as they can.  (Harry, let me know if you need any).

Thanks Bill! I was going to offer one of mine if you needed it - I still have a few hanging around, just one untouched one left in the little baggie.
