R.I.P. Tommy Smothers
« on: December 27, 2023, 10:31:50 AM »
The Smothers Brothers were big time TV, outspoken against the Vietnam war when it wasn’t in fashion, and just plain funny.    Tommy passed away yesterday.

May the Four Winds Blow You Safely Home.

I just signed to post this terrible news.  Folk music at its best!
You will be missed, Tommy (and Mom did like you better).

IIRC, Pete Townshend attributes some of his hearing loss to this particular performance on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.   The story goes that the stage hand union insisted that the stage hands had to be the ones to load the explosives in Moon’s drum set.   Not realizing this, Moon loaded explosives himself.   The result was an explosion louder and more powerful than intended, causing damage to Townshend’s ears.

I got to hang with Tommy on a long break at a country club gig 25 years ago. A really sweet, incredibly funny guy with amazing stories. Wish I could remember them...

Trivia:

When The Who made their first appearance on the show, they were to conclude their performance of "My Generation" by doing their usual instrument smashing as well as having some smoke powder ignite in Keith Moon's bass drums as well. Earlier that day at rehearsals, the band was dissatisfied with how the effect went off so they asked that more of a charge be put in. Unknown to the band, Moon put even more of a charge in later. As the band concluded their performance, instead of a smoking effect, a huge explosion occurred. This caused Moon to suffer cuts on his arm and, more importantly, Pete Townshend suffered damage to his hearing, which would affect him in later years.

Singer/songwriter Janis Ian appeared on the show at 16 years of age, performing "Society's Child", a song she wrote about interracial dating. The number was censored in some--mostly Southern--markets.

Far better than Bob as Super Dave Osborn (I never really got that shtick).
