A diamond in hte rough?
« on: October 03, 2023, 08:06:34 AM »
so about 6 months ago my search for a 5-string long scale unlined fingerboard fretless series bass with LEDs ended with a compromise - a 4-string purportedly anniversary bass (there.  spelled it wright for once) decked out with the other stuff i wanted.
i get the build sheet for it last night and it turns out it's a shop night bass that got given an emblem and serial number.  it's a series II body with i think is anniversary electronics.  the output is definitely stereo.  looks like CVQ filters.  build sheet says ebony neck lams.  they're brown like the top, definitely not purpleheart.  the logo is real spiffy, kinda like the one on my SII.

i bought this bass for its fretlessness, i play it almost every day.  the tone outta this thing is a knockout.  it's appearance is kinda dark and unassuming otherwise so i never really looked at it closely in detail until last night.  i named this bass the A-Bass for lack of a better name never knowing it was closer to my SII than my MK.

pretty sure this one's staying in the family.

Nice slickboard there... glad it's found a home. Someone else might remember; was this one of Val's basses? He was well before my time here, but it seems to fit the timeline and general artistic direction.

I think in some ways, fretlesses become very personal things, more so than say, an otherwise identical fretted counterpart. I realized that having two fretless Alembics was almost working against me on some level, and I parted with a beautiful Distillate fretless last year. It had no flaws at all, and the guy who bought it called me literally in tears having realized a dream of his when he got it. It was a superb instrument, but it simply could not compete with, or replace my Custom. Things worked out like they were supposed to.
