"pickup serie 1
« on: September 16, 2023, 06:07:54 AM »
Good morning everyone,
I'm looking for a pickup for my Alembic series 1 from the 80s, unfortunately the bridge pickup is turned off, if anyone has one for sale I would be very interested
Thank you

Oscar, it may not be that easy to just buy a single pickup and have it sound right in that Series 1.  Alembic has to match pairs of pickup then Ron tunes the system to get the most output and least noise.   Replacing 1 pickup could sound very different.  You might want to call Alembic or Gary Brawer in Berkeley, CA, to discuss.

I have a couple of 1980 series I pickups that i would be prepared to sell if i knew what they are worth. That said I wouldn't sell them individually for the reasons pauljones mentioned and also i think trying to sell a single pickup might be a challenge.
The sound of Alembic is medicine for the soul!

I don’t think the pickups would be so different that it would cause problems buying a single replacement. What Paul is talking about is the most recent noise-reducing mod available from the factory. That can sometimes involve finding a “matched” pair of pickups and then fine tuning the preamp board for that individual bass. This may not be necessary for the OP if his bass doesn’t have a noise problem in the first place. And in his current situation I think replacing just the bridge pickup seems the logical approach. .

That said, if Jazzyvee wants to sell his spares as a pair and you two can agree on a  price, that could be a great option.

I have swapped around some series pickups before and didn't hear any hum or anything.

The noise problem isn't universal on all pickups - it's dependent on the amount of copper in each pickup, and of course the location on Earth. A pickup that's noisy in Toronto might be quiet in Prague. But mostly it's noisier where there are more high frequency noise sources. About 25-30% of non-upgraded Series I/II instruments have an acceptable level of noise for many people, meaning there's audible noise.

What I prefer to do is supply a set of Series I/II pickups including the hum canceler since having the pickups hyper-matched is the first step in most upgrades. Of course once I explain this, if the customer still wants to replace just one I will sell it - but they will know the risk.

Please understand this isn't about hum at all - the original hum-balance circuit works just as good today as it did way back when, the hum problem hasn't changed. What we're talking about is directional high-frequency noise.
