Connecting music to a location.
« on: August 22, 2023, 07:29:13 PM »
We have a few days off so today we are dropping one of out party to the airport so have taken a drive through Los angeles and headed towards the observatory near the Greek Theatre and lo and behold it is in Griffith Park which is also the name of one of my favourite albums ‘the Griffith Park Collection’. Then passed The Greek Theatre where Stanley’s album ‘Live at the Greek’ was recorded and this will be where i will be gigging this Sunday. 🤩🙏🏻

This tour has also made another connection. My first bass hero was Aston Familyman Barrett who inspired me to play bass. Many years later my first commercial bass recording was playing a cover of the Wailers track i shot the sherriff and my first track i played on my first tour as a bassist here in the USA is another wailers track ‘One Love’. And the icing onnthe cake is i did both those with an alembic. 👍🏾🤩🤝

Cool, when it works out that way.  8)

Sounds like this U.S. tour has been a good time, Jazzy.  :)

so far so good. Next week we have some days off so the plan now my other half has arrived is to hire s car and have a mini road trip holiday with some sight seeing. That includes a trip to alembic which i think is around 8 hrs. We could fly but we would need s car wherever we go and going by car means we can stop if we find anything interesting en route.

Hope you will have time for a mini Bay Area Alembic gathering while you are in town.

I hope to Bill, it would be good to meet up again. I will try to give you and mica a call tomorrow. My current plan is to get a hire car on Monday 28th Aug and drive up to San Francisco area. Ideally Stay there overnight then drive up to Alembic on Tuesday 29th August, then do some sightseeing before driving down to Saratoga for the next gig on 1st September. So it would be great to have a mini gathering up in the bay area if possible.

When we were there in 2012 JimmyJ suggested a cool trip from Hollywood, up Laurel Canyon (which was high on my list of 'must do's), Along Mulholland a bit then down Coldwater canyon to Ventura Boulevard. Headed west a bit then came back to Santa Monica via Topanga Canyon. We then headed into Griffith Park and up to the observatory for a while before heading back to the Baked Potato for an evening of Music.  A great trip that will stick in my memory for a very long time.  The next night we saw Bonnie Raitt at the Greek - Marvelous.

If you're driving from SoCal to the Bay Area, Jazzy, there's only one way to do it - the Pacific Coast Highway.  One of the most spectacular roads you'll find.  Basically a winding mountain 2-lane, except the downhill side isn't a valley, it's the Pacific.

There is a closure of Pacific Coast Highway about 25 miles south of Big Sur in the Lucia - Limekiln State Park area, which would require a fairly long detour inland. Bill would probably know better about a route, if you choose to take PCH for part of your trip. It's a beautiful drive, but plan on some extra time.

Since you have limited time I would take I-5 straight up and make a coast visit once you are in the Bay Area. Depending upon where you are planning to stay the trip over to Monterey and that section of the coast is a nice drive and if you have any interest in John Steinbeck that whole area is where his books take place. There is of course the northern coast along Hwy 1 as well that might fit better with a trip to Alembic.

I haven't been back to CA for a long time now but you are not that far from Yosemite National Park either. When we lived in the South Bay Area it was about a 2.5 hour drive to the park. I'm not sure if you can drive into the valley anymore or if you are forced to use the shuttle buses so that might affect your decision. Just thought I'd bring it up depending your schedule.
