Gig bag for Series I Standard Point?
« on: May 18, 2023, 11:55:05 AM »
Does anyone know of a gig bag that will fit a Series I Standard Point? (or Omega Point which might be the same size?)

I measure mine at 50" length including the point, with a lower bout width of 16", but I have not been able to find a gig bag that advertises that it can accommodate those dimensions.

Nearly every bag say 47"-48.5", with a lower bout width of 14"-15.5". The only one larger than this that I have found is the GruvGear GigBlade 3 that says it is 49"×16". Mono says theirs are too small, as do Access, Fusion, Gator, Harvest and Reunion Blue. Body Glove was referenced here about 10 years ago but apparently they don't make them any more.

Thanks.

I just bought a Reunion Blues Continental Voyager and it fits my 70s era long scale standard point basses nicely.

Great cases. I got one for my 1983 Modulus 6 string neck through with an absurdly large headstock. Now I use it for all my basses (except the Starfire, which has a custom Cronkhite).

I haven't seen one in person, but Cronkhite Cases also does custom orders.

Thanks everyone! Sounds like Reunion Blues Continental Voyager is the one to get.

It's also in stock locally so I can try it first, unlike some of the others that looked pretty good (Gruv Gear GigBlade 3, Markbass MB Bass Bag Nano Pocket & MB Bass Bag Deluxe).

Has anyone here tried a Cronkhite gig bag. They look well made but are a bit more pricey than the reunion blues variant.  Wondering if they offer better protection or are just more expensive. I’m now feeling proficient enough on my long scale series I fretless to take it to local gigs and really don’t have anything that fits it well. It came with a very nice leather gig bag that I needed to toss due to black mold and a pretty much unlined flight case. So at this point I’m sort of cramming it into a bag that it doesn’t fit. I don't want to continue doing that when I get a refurbish done on it.

I haven't seen one from the new makers of Cronkhite, but the original ones were lovely. Cronkhite does custom bags, and that's the main attraction. As far as I know Reunion Blues doesn't.

Thanks Mica

I'll need to see if I can find someone with their product out here in MN. A lot to invest for something you haven't seen.

I think Edwin might have a Cronkite bag,

I communicated with reunion Blues a few times a couple of years ago suggesting that they make the continental voyager bag a little longer to accommodate long scale standard point Alembic basses.  Looks like they finally did (not that I had any influence) because my new reunion blues CV bag fits my 70s long scale standard point basses well.

A belated follow up: I tried several bags and researched many more, and the Reunion Blues Continental Voyager really is the only one that fits the Series I Standard Point well.

Ones that won’t fit it: anything by Access, Fusion, Gator, Harvest, MarkBass or Mono. I don’t think Cronkhite does either but I didn’t want a leather bag (heavy, expensive, and leather). GruvGear might have one that could work, the GigBlade 3, but wasn’t carried by any brick & mortar retailers which I wanted in case I needed to return it.

Attached are the photos showing how it fits. There is only one exterior pocket and it will actually fit the preamp box, but I don’t think I’d be comfortable transporting it that way often because if it were to fall on that side the box could damage the guitar.

One other bag that could work by trimming or removing some of the padding is the Road Runner RR5TEB Highway Premium. It seems almost as nice as the Reunion Blues (similar protection, more storage) at less than half the price ($100 vs $250). You can see how it works in the last two photos attached — it’s the one with the gray interior. I might have used this to save money but I didn’t want to mess with the padding since I also want to use it for my other bass. Removing the lower padding makes it fit nicely but the point is less protected (it’s a little more exposed on the Reunion Blues bag too but at least that has space for the horn and more support for the lower bout).

The newer Levy's leather bag fits my medium scale standard point well (older ones are a bit tight but does fit). Good padding and durable, too.

Interesting. I don't think my RB bag had the padding for the body when I got it used. I'll reach out to them and see if I can order that very thing! Thank you!

I have the Road Runner Highway Premium bag for guitar.  GREAT protective hard-sided gig bag.   Even brother Cozmic Cowboy, who notoriously hates gig bags, gave the RR a grudging endorsement.   And the cherry on top is that I got it as a Musician’s Friend Stupid Deal of the Day!

The point looks very secure in that bag.

Is that a Martin strap?
