I love it!  Amazing that it is actually a working axe.  But as you can see in the vid he only ever plays either the top two or bottom strings.  In fact you can see the foam stuffed under the remaining ... 14 (HA!) near the bridge.  Very funny though and a great sight-gag.  Oh, and rockin' too.

I think the normal playing style for this would be two hand tapping more like a Chapman Stick than a typical bass guitar. Jean Baudin comes to mind as one of these types of players. I agree with you Jimmy that for ZZ Top it is all for show but it is still impressive that he can hold that thing and be able to stand up at the same time.
