Interesting Essence 5 Custom on ebay
« on: April 19, 2023, 01:49:43 PM »

Cool Essence 5, Signature 'tronics, fan headstock, LED's, abalone 'Dragonfly' inlay, and the rad red made me think about Joey's BIG RED SPOILER.

Isn't that the Jimmy Johnson style peghead?

I have a fan peghead on my 1978 Series I five-string. I like the way it looks but think that design may be heavier than some of the other options. Pretty sure Jimmy also has at least one bass with the fan peghead. The early five-strings also had really narrow necks, I believe they were built on four-string necks at the time.

This is a cool custom Essence but no more red basses for me, one is enough, definitely prefer the look of natural wood for basses, preferably darker wood.

Here is my biggest fan, follows me to gigs. After owning this bass since 1984 or so I finally had custom length strings made for it which really helped straighten out the pull and fit of the B-string in particular. Medium scale bass and up until recently none of the strings I used fit properly. Winding always ended up wrapped around the tuner peg. This photo was taken before I put the custom strings on.

I can't get the quote function to work today, but no, the original 5-string basses were not on 4-string necks, but they were quite narrow compared to a modern 5-string bass. 4-string fingerboards were 1.75 x 2.25 and 5-strings 2.00 x 2.50

The 5-string fan peghead on this Essence is shorter than the original shape.

This red Essence on Ebay is just amazing! I remember this build, and it looks better in person as we all know.

Thanks for the clarification about the early five-string necks Mica!
