1998 Walnut Orion 5 String
« on: February 21, 2023, 05:03:46 AM »
Bought from a shop in London on Saturday, and arrived about an hour ago. Nice case but not custom fitted so has a too much space to move about. Probably made for a FSO style bass. May be able to pad it out for a better fit.
The bass was really cold so letting it sit inside the case for a while.

OK, just stopped for lunch and plugged this bass in to my rig.............WOW... just  WOW, Alembic never fails to impress me. I really didn't know what to expect other than it to sound good. Clearly the controls are not as flexible as filters but they sound phenomenal.

Just got a message for a couple of rehearsals this week so perfect timing. The bass feels so light compared themy through necks and comes in at about 10lbs on my inaccurate travel hanging scales. Balance is great too.

My first Alembic is an Orion. Not having the filters is different. The pickup system is what sold me on the brand. The two band works so well on the fretless. I was use to having an onboard EQ so it was an easy transition. I'm still figuring out the filters on my Pbass and Series I but I'm not going back. Other electronic systems sound inferior to me now.

Check local craft stores, they should have foam that can easily be trimmed to help cradle the bass more securely.

Paul (who didn’t realize until the last couple weeks how very beautiful walnut is)

Congratulations on your pretty and sexy new bass! If you are thinking about taking this one on tour you may want to investigate what kind of backline will be provided and maybe even rent a similar amp for a rehearsal or two. The bass will sound great no matter what you play through but definitely different than using your Alembic pre and Barefaced cabs. Meanwhile... enjoy!

This is the one I was considering 10yrs ago which was during the time I was saving hard for a series shorty. Thankfully i resisted and was rewarded with one a few years later but still a lovely bass.

I was use to having an onboard EQ so it was an easy transition. I'm still figuring out the filters on my Pbass and Series I but I'm not going back. Other electronic systems sound inferior to me now.

The last couple of evenings i've been doing a blow by blow side by side comparison between this Orion and my standard europa.
Hands down, overall the europa has a better representation of the alembic sound i am familiar with. Smoother more variety and much sweeter and denser in the mids and higher frequencies.
What I really like with the Orion is the mainly the bottom end I can dial in from the bass and it does have a different overall alembic sound which is slightly "harsher" than what my filter basses have.  Yes i think i have found a simpler alembic bass that I can use primarily for reggae, music where i don't need the flexibility a filter bass and also as a lighter backup bass when i feel the need to carry two basses.

What is swinging things towards the Orion is that the standard Europa has a range of sounds I can get from my black Europa with anniversary electronics that has for a long while been my go to gigging bass. So losing the standard europa would not remove any tonality from my disposal but it seems strange to consider dropping a higher spec instrument for what seems to be a lower spec instrument. I'm not going to rush to make a decision as i'm not pressed for time. However i value any experience that you can provide to aid my thinking. I'm definitely not going to keep both basses, that's a certainty.

Rehearsal went really well sounded great full and powerful through my rack and barefaced Big Baby II cab. Guitarist grinned approvingly. It's getting a clean and polish and oiling of the fretboard then new strings tomorrow. Well I will put new strings on one of my other basses and move it's older strings on to this bass since they will have mellowed nicely with a bit less top end zing.

It seems that way. Ha. Like myself, he has a healthy passion for tone and loves the sound of my basses, as I do his guitars. We both love Strats.

My favorite aspect of the boost/cut EQ is cutting the frequency. The treble cut in particular. I do not sound like a traditional equalizer to me. When cut, the treble circuit does remove some high end but also focuses the upper mids the more you cut. Bass sort of works that way with the lower mids. It's very interesting and have dialed in some wonderful tones with my fretless.  I would love to have a fretted bass with the bass/treble circuit. I am taking delivery of a Europa soon so that will be close.

Interesting as the Orion was bought a possible replacement for my Europa 5. The thing is I will have to adjust to moving the controls the opposite direction to filters to emphasise the low end.

The bass sounded great through my stage rig on it's first outing. That said we did have issues with the sound from all our instruments in the venue and our new in ear monitoring system which seems to have gain staging issues and it's something more we are going to work out at rehearsals. I have been playing this new orion a lot since purchase so that I have a chance to get familiar with it. I'm acutely aware of the difference in the way tone is developed on filter and not filter basses now. Plus it is so much lighter. I just need to give my Europa a good clean and polish, oil the fretboard etc and get it ready for sale. :-(

Two years now with this lovely used walnut Orion 5 string that I bought just before going on a tour in the USA in the summer of 2023.
It's my only non filter alembic and it was perfect. Lightweight, great sound and no neck adjustment needed even though we travelled from UK, were based in the dry and hot Cathedral City, California and as far north as Seattle.
