showed up at teh audition with the PJB 2x4 ( A.K.A. the mouse that roars) and the mighty MK Deluxe.  tried out with my old bandmate steve on the drums. we got the gig. there's 139 years between the two of us. hadda run out and pick up a markbass setup so i won't break my back getting my amp outta the car.  might have to pick up a beater to play at the dives.

looks like we'll be prowling the mean streets of denver around march.

well this one may be the one that puts me in the grave.

first order of business is to get a bass amp that fits in the back of my clown car, won't break my back and has enough punch to fill a small-to-medium room.

nipped into the local GC, walked out with this.  imho nothing vibrates the hodown like a big cab with 15-inchers moving the air.  not really sold on the sound of this cab, but at ~30 lbs. for the whole shootin match i can learn to live with it.  i can one-arm this one while juggling a cuppa coffee and a cell phone.  might paint over the yellow and get a tie-dye grille cover should this turn into a going thing.  if not, i got 44 days to take it back.

if i gig with the alembics, it'll be the MK deluxe or the mighty fretless. gonna give them both a workout with this rig tomorrow. might hafta look for a $300 5-string beater for when we play the dew drop inn.

Don't paint it yet!  Check into fEARful cabs; they're a free-on-the net homebrew design, but you can find them ready-made, and maybe used (though I can't imagine selling one).  I went to see Edwin's band Shakedown Street (in Denver, as it happens), and his fEARful 15/6/1 sounded absolutely magisterial.  After the gig, he told me to pick it up; as a former roadie I know what it takes to hoist something like that, and lifted accordingly.  Almost threw through the roof!  I want say it was 32 lbs or some such (Edwin?).

Believe it or not the Music Man Sterlings are a very good cheap bass. I got a returned one, still with the coverings on the tuners for under $300 and relaced the pup with an Aguilar. Sounds really good.

Laugh if you want, but I really like the SWR Workingman 10 and 12 combos for light weight and great sound, plus they have built in outputs to go direct to the PA. The only other Workingman one I like is the 15 combo but it's heavy. And since they are so out-of-style, they are cheap. Just don't let the cat near one...

I use a Carvin MB 15 but that was with a swing band playing ‘swing band’ venues. I have pretty much written off gigging (says the guy who is in bed at 9:00).  I am currently doing ‘remote’ bass tracks for whomever is seeking such a thing.  Not for money, just for being creative.

having seen what happens to band equipment when i played the bar and festival circuit around here years ago i'm not really in the mood to see my bass case (with bass still in it) used for a ramp to wheel speaker cabinets up to a truck bed, get one of my few prized possessions spirited away if i take my eyes off it for a microsecond or getting to see how far a .22 round will penetrate into a bass body (true story).  might make an interesting effect on a buckeye burl top.

on the other hand i just gotta show these babies off. so i'll play it by ear.  if we're doing a gig with sufficient security presence, then hell yeah i'm taking the alembics!  just try and stop me!

as a side note - my ebony SII is stereo only.  wonder how two of these rigs would sound side-by-side with a DS-5 on top an me pickin and grinin until my back gives out.   hmmmmmm.

+1 vote, keep insurance on them (I like Heritage) and play your Alembics. Shop around for a well-loved Essence 5 or Europa if you'd rather not carry those heavy-hitters around.

Tim, the SII can be mono by using the “bass” out on the DS-5

Sounds like a fun project and good opportunity, big plus that you already have a playing relationship with the drummer. What kind of music does the band play? Lots of light weight gear choices these days but the best stuff tends to be expensive so worth doing some homework before plunking down any cash. +1 on the Barefaced cabinets, loud, light, great sounding and can handle a ton of power.

+1 on barefaced cabs being great sounding and extremely light compared to traditional cabs. I have 4 to choose from. Best cabs i've heard my alembics through. Go for the 10" speakers for a more traditional sound and 12" for more hifi sound.
I have 3 cabs with 12" speakers and 1x18" sub.
