Interesting bass with Alembic pickups.
« on: September 18, 2022, 06:46:29 AM »
Only heard of Jim Beach a couple times, not sure what, if any provenance here, but definitely got Alembic pickups. 1978 is pretty early for AXY's, but they could have been put in later. Could they be Series pickups, with a humcanceller inside? Anyway... cool-looking, unusual bass.

Well, I don't really know what else about this bass, but a little bit of reading up on Beach, and Wooden, and early Hamer guitars answered most of my questions. It's legitimately one of his for sure. What it's doing in Japan, outfitted with what looks like Alembic pickups is anybody's guess...

Wow.

Probably Bartolini passive --just like my German Brodtrager Bass, which is for sale if someone wants it.

Hi Wolf, the Brodtrager Bass. It's loaded with stock Bartolini's that are the same shape as Alembic pickups. Also, they are very low output not unlike Alembic pickups. But honestly, they sound good without a preamp; just raise the gain on your amp and they sound great. You could easily put a Blaster in there as there is a switch already there to do that if you wanted to. Structurally it's sound, but there's a crack up by the nut that looks like a chip out of the finish and sort of repaired but not a broken peg head or any of that. After I bought it I had a really nice fret job done on it. Italso has some position markers on the fretboard that had fallen out or whatever and some material was put in there to correct that. I won't be back at my other home until the middle of December. I'll pull it out and look it over then if you want me to. Keith

As I mentioned in another thread on the JIM BEACH bass , I have seen a photo of the control cavity and the electronics are PASSIVE and in no way ALEMBIC. The Pickups are likely BARTOLINI passive.I advised the seller of the error in his listing several months ago ,yet he has not corrected it.
