DS-5 mono-stereo switch

Not sure if this is the right place for this question.


Just wondering why the mono-stereo switch was added to the newer DS-5 boxes?  You still use the bass out for mono.


My older ones have no switch and you just plug into the bass jack for mono output.

I think it was to avoid the complication of using the switching 1/4" jack.  That exposed reed switch could be less reliable than a good old solid toggle switch.

I use the second mono output on the newer DS-5 for my stroboflip tuner. I imagine you could use if for a send to a D.I. or to a recording mixer. I have both DS-5s and prefer the newer one.

Stephen, do you have it set to stereo or mono when using a tuner in the treble out?

Mono, set to stereo it functions like the old one.

I've honestly never thought of that before, but what a great idea! I guess it would work just as well for my little pocket-sized Korg Chromatic CA-30... just using the same short 1/4" patch cable I use to tune with before downbeat. Leave it plugged into the treble jack, and simply flip the switch to stereo when I need to check tuning? I guess you have to make sure the pickup selector switch is in a position that will work... (bridge pickup, in this scenario)

*this has totally triggered me... I'm soooo missing gigging now! The few minutes of getting loose  before getting ready to play. Durnit.

I always tune using the neck pickup.  My understanding is that the neck PU gives a purer fundamental signal than the bridge PU and, as a result, lends itself to more accurate tuning.

Greg, I never change the switch from mono, my tuner is always on and connected to AC power. The other mono send from the DS-5 goes to the Avalon U5 I use to send my bass to FOH. When I want to tune I mute the U5 signal to FOH. With the old style DS-5 my tuner was in the signal chain between my bass and the U5. I prefer as uncluttered a signal chain as possible, that is a big reason I prefer the new DS-5. If I want to tune using the bridge pickup I use the pickup selector.

I've got nothing but time to experiment with it. Cool idea. I have a Polytune II on my pedalboard that mutes my signal chain anyway, but this could work for times when I am not using that. My little pocket tuner is very accurate, but only when plugged-in.
