TI Flats and Series I Electronics

Hi All,


It's been a while since I last posted.  Just played my Europa 5 w/ Series I electronics at a gig this last weekend.  It was a joy to play.


If I'm not mistaken, early Series instruments were generally fitted with flat wound strings.  I thought it might be fun to fit my bass with TI Flats.


A couple of days ago I did this and I am pretty happy with the results.  Question for you all, how many are using flatwounds on your Alembics?

I have TI Flats on my '83 Maple 5 string Series 1 and on my 5 string Essence Fretless and love them.  Tone for days, great for both fingerstyle and using a pick.

Had TI flats on my 6 string Series II for a good long while, then switched to the Jazz Rounds for another good while. Can't have them both on at the same time, unfortunately. I could try a mix of low flats and high rounds, and the other way around, just to see what gives. And I might just get a new set of the rounds. Options, options.

Just put TI flats on my Series II. Sound great, but have to make a few adjustments. Just giving the neck a little time to adjust.

I tried nylon coated flats on my Europa signature 5 string and didn't like the sound at all. I put them on my acoustic bass guitar and i'm not really taken with the sound, to be honest, but left them on as they are much better than the clattery bronze strings that came with the bass.

I use flatwounds on all my Alembics.  Every now and then I try a set of round wounds. That lasts about five minutes and I go right back to flatwounds. I just prefer the flatwound sound. 


I use Labella low tension flats.

I've had TI  Flats on my Series I and 5 string Rogue for years now, 
really happy with the results.  I tried the Chromes, but, found them
to be too much work.

I have TI flatwounds on all but one of my Alembics and love them. The TIs definitely take a bit of getting used to (by both the player and your basses neck) because they are as low tension as they get. Some don’t like them for that reason. The only bass I have without TI flats is a Moonstone 5 string for which I would have needed extra-long TIs because of where the tailpiece sits. After speaking with the US distributor I passed on them because the consensus was they were going to be very low tension. I love the sounds of the TI flats with a pick.

Flats on 84 Distillate.   
Pretty sure they are D’addario XL Chromes.   Coming from GHS Boomers they felt a bit stiffer but no complaints.

I used to do the opposite! Still have Pyramid Golds on my Starfire with Alembic pickups and SII electronics as well as on my Dark Star equipped EB3. Feels perfect.
