Custom Epic/Essence/Rogue
« on: August 19, 2022, 11:18:55 AM »
Ever find you go looking for something... only to learn that something else has been looking for you?

About a year ago, on the occasion of my (semi-)retirement I was given an unexpected very generous gift certificate at a local boutique guitar shop. My first thought was - now I can afford an Alembic bass!

I really hoped to find a short or medium scale - a Distillate, a Stanley Clarke Signature, or even a Series I (which would have been worth paying extra for). Whatever I eventually got would have to be neck-through and have a filter preamp.

After a year of watching the web site, something rather different came up: a used custom bass with Epic body shape, neck-through construction like an Essence, the electronics of a Rogue/Europa and a split P-bass style pickup at the neck. 34" scale, but oh, man, that graceful Epic shape, and the burl maple top!

My first visit to the shop was too short - bad traffic, detour, unfamiliar roads - and I didn't get enough time with it to be certain before the shop was closing for the day. My return visit was much better (arrived in the morning), and I got to play it for as long as I wanted through a better amp. End result: this almost like new custom bass has found a new forever home.

I don't have to tell anyone here about the amazing range of tones available with these controls; many more eloquent words than mine have been written. What I don't see discussed as often is how comfortable this style is! It's perfectly balanced, and the contours are just right.

Here's my homecoming snapshot. I'll try to post some of the professional photos from the shop as well.

Here are a couple pictures the shop had on their website.

That's a nice bass... someone was wise to order with the MXY in the bridge position rather than the JZ shape. Good call there... I bet that makes a great pairing for the P neck pickup. Aesthetically, I especially like the dark pinstripe between the top and core too. Very nice touch. Enjoy your retirement bass. I'm sticking with EpiLogue.  ;D

Someone made a lot of wise choices in this custom build. Yes, the pickups work really well together. The Europa/Rogue preamp that combines a filter with the bass/treble boost/flat/cut switches gets the most out of them. (I think you had essentially this setup in the Distillate you just sold, so you know what I mean.) The only thing I might have done differently there would have been a 3-position Q... I might think about upgrading that eventually, but I've barely begun finding all the different sounds available with what I have.

Yes, that pinstripe looks good. I like the way it reveals the contours of the front of the body. Speaking of contours, it's a really comfortable bass to play. And I really like a body shape that has a smooth curve across the neck (the Orion has that too, as does my Rick 4001).

Congratulations on your acquisition.  A very lovely, unique bass.  There's a lot to be said for a small, well contoured body on a bass, especially if yer gonna gig it.

Cheers!

Wow, has it really been two years? I forgot to post here on the exact anniversary of acquiring this bass.

Yes, it still makes me smile every time I open the case, and it's getting played a lot! It's been in the studio a few times (why do those projects always take so long to complete? I'm hoping to have something to post here someday), and a fair number of gigs. It's my #1 fretted bass - and that says a lot because it has supplanted a couple of other nice ones (2014 Epiphone Jack Casady Signature, a much better instrument than its list price would suggest, my gig #2 fretted; and a 1972 Rickenbacker 4001, which is mostly a studio instrument these days).

Still dreaming of a short scale small body bass - Series I or Stanley Clarke Signature. That's the only downside of owning an Alembic: makes me want more  ;)

And still experimenting with strings... I liked the Alembic CX-3 strings and they lasted a surprisingly long time still sounding good. I tried Ernie Ball Cobalt Flatwounds, I thought I'd stick with them until the D string snapped right at the tuning post while I was bringing it back to pitch after tweaking the setup, apparently not an unusual experience with them. I put on a fresh set of CX-3 (which I actually bought for the Casady) for now; I have some Pyramid Gold Flats 640/A in the mail that will go on as soon as they arrive. This bass can be a real RAWK MAWNSTER with roundwounds, I'm looking for something just a little less aggressive.

Right? Sometimes I open the case and just have to stare at it awhile before I pick it up and play it  :D
