What kind of wood is this?
« on: August 09, 2022, 11:38:44 AM »
Hi,
My wife and I got this new breakfast table, and the maker does
not specify what type of wood is used. It’s manufactured in India.
Any ideas from you wood experts what kind of wood was used?
Thanks!

I have a number of furniture items made in india from what looks like the same wood although not as dramatic as that. Mine is made from Sheesham wood (Dalbergia Sisso), which is used a lot in indian furniture making. I expect yours is the same.

I agree, that's some kind of rosewood. Probably was unsuitable for musical instruments, but made a fine breakfast table!

Looking up the wood Jazzy Vee mentions I think he has identified it. The search brought up a number of furniture pieces that closely resemble the wood in the table.

If you guys like this game, I've got a bass fingerboard with a wood I can't identify. I sent a picture of it to Mica, and she thought it might be nara, or even persimmon, a relative of ebony. Whatever it is, it's on a Chinese upright, full of curly figure, smells kinda' bitter when sanded, and I should know, because it's bowed like a ski. Bowed back. Pretty stuff though. I'll post a picture later, if anybody wants to take a guess. (it doesn't matter for the bass - I'm replacing it...)
