75-183 and Me
« on: July 13, 2022, 04:16:21 PM »
Happy to share that I have taken possession of 75-183 as the new proud owner. I’ve been oiling and polishing and she’s cleaned up nicely, so I have taken some new pics.

A few thoughts and issues.

Differences from my 76 series basses include single screw dog-eared pickups,
a somewhat different brass bridge/block configuration, omega cutout and arched rosewood fingerboard.

The rosewood is beautiful. The zebrawood top and back appear to be from "The Log" or "The Zebrawood"
that is famous from some of these 70s basses, like another of mine, 76-270.

75-183 is medium 32" scale, which is new to me, but I like it. (My other basses are long scale 34")

The abalone fretboard inlays are mostly in pretty bad condition with some totally rubbed off. Would love to see them restored, but not dying to part with the bass to send it in yet. I wonder if replacing them could be possible locally. Meanwhile, the frets are fine.

Another interesting thing is the sound of the bridge pickup is fatter and louder (even adjusted from back cavity plate) than either of my 76 basses. But unfortunately there is a pretty loud high end buzz from the otherwise better sounding 75-183 bridge pickup. The buzz can be filtered to be much quieter, but would love if it could be resolved. This buzz does not seem to be effected at all by the direction I’m facing, it is the same volume any direction I turn. Hmmm. Despite no upgrades that I know of, neither of my 76 series basses have any buzzing or noise. But the general character of both those 76 bridge pickups is thinner and imo not as nice sounding as the 75-183 bridge pickup that buzzes. Go figure. In brighter light the pickups look like army green, am I imagining it?

I’ve been through the old threads on this bass and have the specs, only I know it was back at Alembic at some point and I haven’t found info on what newer work was actually done. If anyone knows…

Enjoy the new pics!

The rosewood fingerboard looks nice, and the arch is cool, not sure how common that is or was.

To my ears the older pickups sound a little different too, warmer and a little more open sounding (which I like), less hifi, but that’s just my impression.  Have you tried adjusting the trim pots to try to reduce the hi frequency noise?  Otherwise you may need the electronics upgrade on that one.

For the inlays I would suggest sending it into Alembic to have them replaced, they are working with some beautiful abalone, much like 76-270, which would look nice on 183.

Very nice bass :)

Yes I’m already enjoying playing her. Kind of like the Webb photos for me—a look further back into the history of the Alembic universe than I’ve experienced so far!

P.S. Man those actual Webb photos are truly mind blowing!

Very nice bass. As Rob says, definitely adjust the Bridge pickup hum balance trim pot on the back plate.

Omg! I’ve never used the hum adjustment pots, as I’ve never had any noise before. Also, I think of hum as much lower frequency than the buzz I experienced here. Having said this, I just jacked up the bridge pickup buzz using the filter and boost, and used the hum balance trim pot to completely eliminate it. Wow, what an invention! Thanks guys (and most importantly, Ron W)!

Awesome, glad that worked!

The FAQ and Must Read pages here at the Club are worth a read through if you haven’t yet.  Here is the link to the Series instruments threads

https://club.alembic.com/index.php?board=23.0

And here is the link to the Manual page from the Alembic Guitars site, which is also helpful

http://alembic.com/support/care.html

Keep exploring and enjoy!  :)

…so now having had a conversation with Welovecats, after he acquired Rosie (and I am very thankful for that conversation)… which also led to a quick bit of research on the Club… I am convinced that Rosie has ended up in the care of someone who appreciates her the most… probably second only to  Edwardofhuncote, who truly loves the Omegas.  So I am truly appreciative that this has worked out so that Rosie will be played and appreciated, and that I will be able to watch the next leg of her journey from afar.  Rather than she end up overseas in the locked cellar of a collector, as before.  Only, I do request that she be referred to by her name, rather than just a number.  So, while I have no right to do so, I request  she be referred to as Rosie, or “Rosie, 75-183” to assists in Club searches.  (😊 big smiley face here to ensure the tone of this post comes through!)

Second request… I think we would all love to see a group photo of Rosie and her Zebra sisters, 76-270 and 76-512!  (Perhaps they should have names as well?!).   Perhaps this will send Greg deeper into researching the infamous Zebra log.

Finally, I am making you all witnesses, I claim first right of refusal if Welovecats ever decides to part with Rosie.  Would three times be the record for someone selling and re-purchasing an Alembic?  😁.  It is truly with a warm heart That I publicly wish you best of luck and the greatest enjoyment!  Allen

sorry - a little late to the party, i got stoned and i missed it.

congratulations on your acquisition.  those mid-70's series I's are a whole class to their own.

i hadn't realized it was one of the famous zebra sisters that passed through my hands.  she was a beauty but alas we parted on friendly terms to much more compatable partners.

i can vouch for the abalone inlays on 76-270.  truly stunning.  made it difficult not to watch my left hand instead of what i was supposed to be doing.
Been down...now i'm out!

I like it when they end up where they are supposed to be.  :)

That bass and me always had a weird connection, and I was just a flash away from making it happen. But now is not the time. I'm just this minute pondering the sale of a couple more of my Alembics, and man, it's hard. But I can't play now, and it's going to be a while. Depending on how things go, may even be done as a performer. A classic like Rosie needs to be played. Glad it's working out this way instead of watching it bounce around http-flipsville.

Hi Allen, sorry this has taken me so long to post. It’s maybe not the ultimate group shot, but still pretty good.
Here standing together are 76-562, 75-183 (Rosie) and 76-270, now known as "the three zebras!" So pretty.
Each with their own sound qualities: 76-562 with warm koa core, 75-183 with medium scale and mahogany core and 76-270 with cherry core, probably the brightest of the bunch. I "love the one I’m with" each time I change between them.
