Using a series guitar with effects.
« on: July 04, 2022, 01:49:40 AM »
Hi, senior members may recall issues I had many years back trying to get I call a decent overdrive sound using my orion electric guitar. Moving forward I eventually found a solution which was tube a amp and/or a valve OD pedal. So i ended up getting both a Radial Classic and Trimode, both work great.

I've never been a big pedal user though I do have a few on my board the only ones I use with any degree of regularity is Univibe Chorus, Wah pedal and Radial boxes.

As it happens, I have found myself with a couple of rare festival gigs on guitar covering reggae, jazz & jazz-funk, coming up in the next few weeks and plan on using  my series alembic guitar if I can find a solution to this dilemma. ( I'm sure there is a simple solution).

There are times i need to switch quickly from a clean bright tone I have on the guitar to a warm tone for with the mellow saturated distortion/overdrive pedal and there isn't time to tweak the guitar tone and volume knobs to get the right sound before kicking in the pedal. If I leave the guitar sound bright it is always too harsh for the overdriven tone i need.

The tonebone has tone controls but they seem to give me what I want if I can change the guitar sound before kicking it in. Something I can do at home by pausing the track i'm learning and setting things up, but as you know on a gig you sometimes only have a couple of beats before kicking the pedal in and out. How do you guys do it?
Any inexpensive solutions would be welcome.

It may be that I will play safe and use my strat but now, with this rare flurry of gigs and more on the horizon, it just might be the right time to seize the moment and use it as a way to bond with this series dragon of a guitar. :-)

Jazzyvee, the Sarno Earth Drive has a nice warm overdrive tone with a wide range you can dial in.  Another solution is a two channel guitar amp with channel foot switch.  Set one clean, and the other overdrive and switch between the two.  I used to do this with a Peavey Deuce combo amp I had and it worked great, and the natural overdriven tone was warm and nice.  If you don’t have a two channel amp, maybe you can borrow or rent one for use with each gig.

The two channel amp is the best solution I’ve found, not just for my Alembics, but for all my guitars.  These days I’m playing through a Quilter Aviator Mach 3.   The Earth Drive is a great pedal, too.
