I saw that one this morning. Despite the not-so-great picture, I can see that is a very early '77. It's very similar to #617, which I think is still in Europe. I wish they would post a better picture of the logo.

I am guessing, after reading the ad, this guy is a player, now inactive or maybe retired, he has had this bass for 40+ years and priced it based on what a new Series I prices out at. I see a couple issues but I don't feel like nitpicking a classic. He'll sell it for less once the offers roll in.

Did you notice the lighter color core? Maple, or birch maybe? Still very experimental time in early '77. Could be just the pictures or weird lighting.

FWIW, I checked on #77-617... it has a mahogany core, and a more figured birdseye top with some quilting. Also what I think is a Macassar ebony fingerboard.

Similar to 77-611, Welovecats’ Series I guitar, which is a beauty!  :)

I wouldn't be surprised if this one fell between them, or at least was a near neighbor to it. Until 'lovecats guitar showed up, 613 was the earliest '77 on record. I wonder if it's a medium-scale or long? 621 and 624 are both medium-scale, but quite different otherwise.

I think it's a MSB. Note the muted (less pronounced) upper horn. Unique carve on that one.

Yes I immediately thought of 76-611. I made a collage but they’re really not THAT identical. I’m still dying to know specs from mica on 611!

It's actually earlier than 77-611, Cats. I reached out to the guy, and we're talking about it. Explained I have no particular interest in his bass beyond just my fascination with all of them, especially the ones so close to mine. I think he's going to reach out to Alembic for the build information, so maybe we'll see a serial number lookup for it too.

He's already getting advised by the flippersharks how overpriced his bass is. I didn't offer anything beyond just figuring out what it was worth to him. That's really all that matters when you're selling your Alembic after 40 years. I think he kinda' wants a player to have it.
