anybody get blackfinger from pyramid flats?
« on: May 24, 2022, 07:23:09 AM »
With the arrival of 80-1681 and all of the associated hoopla, my other basses have been enjoying a  vacation from the relentless pounding that goes on at the BeenDown manor.  i had just restrung the fretless with pyramid gold flats when this all got started and finally got around to giving her a vigourous workout this morning.  i've used TI jazz flats on all of my fretless basses up to this point, but i could never get the neck on this fretless essence to settle out with those low-tension strings.  the pyramids seem to work really well on this bass, we'll see how we fare together through the summer.
one thing i noticed after playing this morning was that the tips of all my playing fingers had turned black.  i used get that from the phosphor bronze strings i'd put on my long lost Martin ABG.  Kind of got a laff out of it, haven't had blackfinger in a while.  is that a thing with these strings?

Generally a good idea to wipe Pyramid strings down before using. The black stuff is residue from polishing the strings when they are being manufactured.

I recently bought a brand new Fender Player series P Bass and the strings that came on it did that. I thought maybe because they were nickel? I play stainless steel almost exclusively, so that was kind of unexpected. They eventually stopped blackening my fingers. This is from January...

I have nickel on the bass, Tele, Strat, & Sheraton, chrome on the jazz box, nylon/w bronze wound strings on the classical, and phosphor- bronze on the flattops & reso; none of them do that to me (all are D'Addario).

i think it's a body chemistry thing with me, any kind of acoustic instrument with bronze strings turns my fingertips black.  maybe it's from all the dope i smoke? it's been off the chain lately.  i think i'm turning into a full-time stoner.  not that there's anything wrong with that  ::)

I think I can assure you with a fair amount of certainty that it's not the dope.........
