Tony Rice; Interesting Read
« on: May 22, 2022, 06:03:18 AM »
A buddy of mine from the Guitar Universe sent me this a couple weeks ago, and I just got around to reading it.

It's a fascinating look at the guy. I never wear a wristwatch when I play, but if I did...

That is interesting, but in my case I'm a semi-professional goldsmith and amateur musician...funny how he got so into a watch that he created a whole side deal with it, and a kinda obscure one at that, not to mention challenging...back in '94 when I went to jewellery school I was also into watchmaking but would've had to go to Switzerland for that, so that's not happening. I don't think my hands are steady enough for watchmaking anyway, or my eyes good enough, and lately with my intermittent hand tremors, I guess I was right...Tony

I still occasionally wear my dad's (the inspiration for my Diamond Eyed Jack Alembic) 1965(M5) Accutron Spaceview 214 from time to time. It fascinated me as a kid and I love it to this day!

Fascinating. I'd love to see/hear the connection.

I haven't worn a wristwatch for years. (kind of a hazard at work) At gigs, I have this old 17-jewel Elgin a friend of mine rebuilt for me. Parts of it are 130 years old, but not particularly valuable or even collectible. It does keep very good time though... to within about 2-3 seconds per day. It's either on top of my amp, or in a vest pocket.

I wear my father’s watch.  Timex Expedition with the Timex Velcro strap.  The date feature does not work.
It has the Indiglo feature!
The watch is a joke at work as everyone has those ‘smart’ watches.  When I look at it fond memories of my Dad wearing it as Parkinson’s sapped his life away fill my heart.

I have the Timex Indiglo. It is the ideal kayak tripping watch.

Your watch is special; theirs are the joke.

Yeah - I imagine the Indiglo feature would be fun when tripping.............

Paul, are you going sure the date feature doesn't work? It so happens I also have a Timex Expedition (Indiglo backlit) watch. I haven't worn it for years plural, for the aforementioned reasons, but something triggered me to go look.

To the point- setting the date on those is tricky; the button is a two-stage deal... pulling the pin all the way out allows the time hands to be set, but to set the date you push it back in slightly. It's really touchy. Give it a try. It might just be stuck. If you can get it to adjust, spin it around all 31 days. (or was it just 30?)

Thanks Greg.  I did re-try and was able to get it to switch from 30 to 27, and then it did a 'stutter, stutter, shake' with the date and now stops moving and remains at 27.

Not sure if I should pop the back off and try some gentle spraying of compressed air/ contact cleaner kinda thing.

I have no idea how the movement works, but I bet someone does.

Like the thing with Tony Rice... I kinda'-sorta' knew about his thing with the Accutron Spaceview watch, because I am a Rice fan from wayback, but like most, I didn't know just how deep it ran.

Hope you can get it to work.  ;)
