Raising PUs on a Hyak

Can any other Hyak owners here confirm that the height adjustment process with a Hyak bass is the same as that used with Alembics.  I need to get a good deal more volume out of the G string on my recently purchased scroll bass and really can't lower the bridge much or I get fret buzz.

Yes, except mine has allen-head screws. I'll snap a picture when I get home.

Yes, the same as Alembic but with Allen Head screws.

Just got home and I am beat. I'll get the Hyak out tomorrow morning if you still need detailed pics, but it pretty much adjusts like an Alembic.

Not a problem. saw the Allen head screws. Just wanted to make sure it was the same process so I didnt screw things up. Thanks.

It's interesting; I guess I knew but had forgotten about this detail... Hyak pickups are molded so that you have to mount them "Alembic-style" with two height adjustments under and the locks on the opposite corners. The holes are countersunk for the locking screws.


I'm reminded once again, I really need to get back on this project. It's playable, and sounds amazing as-is, so I'm not as motivated to go fooling with it, still, Nick graciously produced a full set of new-old-stock Hyak electronics for it, so it's pure laziness on my part to not get it done. I need to cure the neck releif/draft angle issue first, and I already have it sketched in my head...

The paperwork that came with it indicates that it’s a Cherry body with Purple Heart front and back. After seeing the refurbish Alembic did on one like that several years back, which turned out to be just gorgeous, I’m very tempted. I do wonder, however, how quickly the purple turns to brown. I have a Signature custom that Alembic made for me a decade ago with purple art stringers. One stringer looks as purple as the day it arrived. The other is now more brown than purple

I'm not sure what the woods are in mine, just guesses.


The body core might be mahogany or cherry. The top and back might be schedua or maybe walnut. It's tree-wood for sure. 


I think the neck beam is a combination of maple/purpleheart/vermilion/mahogany and 6 layers of graphite. The graphite is the only thing I'm sure about.

That  bass was mine at one time.    I always thought the top to be schedua.

Sounds like an excellent idea.  It might give me some needed incentive to pull out my Hyak guitar and epoxy the fretboard back onto the neck.
