Europa tempting me back in
« on: April 23, 2022, 11:27:23 AM »
I played a used Europa 4 (koa) today that reminded me of how great these basses are. It’s 10.5 lbs, so lighter than other Alembics I’ve bought and sold.
I do need to go back and play it again because I couldn’t figure out the controls. But this one really turned on the gas jets.
The shop also has a beautiful Ritter Roya 5, but the Alembic sound is so much sweeter.

Sounds like an excellent idea. Have you checked the FAQ topic for Europa controls?

Yes, that’s the one. Are you familiar with this bass?

I’m not familiar with that bass per se but I am with Europas and they are great basses. Easy to use live with not a lot of fiddling needed to get the sound you want and typically very well balanced.

Although I love Koa, I wouldn’t bite on this one unless they came down in price…A Lot! Even with today’s dramatic increase in prices (at least listed prices) and a bass in perfect condition, $7,999 as a starting price for a Europa is way out of wack. They are asking Series I level prices here. A Europa in nice condition of that age should fetch $3,000 - $4,000 (I’ve got a 6 String Europa listed on this site for $3,500).

If this is a bass you really want I’d make them a realistic offer and see if they willing to come down to a reasonable level. If they point to the prices of other Alembics on Reverb as their model I would provide them with information as to how long many of those basses have been sitting on Reverb at greatly inflated prices as well as data as to what Alembics that have sold are actually fetching.
