I can't believe the asking prices for the Spoilers and Persuaders I see on Reverb. There is what looks like a pretty clean 1983 quilted maple topped large body Series 1 for what I think is a reasonable asking price of $6995 but a Spoiler for the same price? Sheesh.

They aren't selling anywhere near what's being asked.

I recently made a purchase of a non Alembic bass with Alembic electronics built by a vary reputable luthier from the Northwest. I offered $2000 less than the asking price thinking that this was going to initiate some negotiation. I was surprised that the offer was immediately accepted and am still sort of kicking myself for not starting lower.

Agreed. What are all these people thinking?

I suppose since Spoilers and Persuaders are not on the current price list it may contribute to the perception of rarity. You're free to order a dozen Spoilers today, so it's not like they are exactly discontinued.

Prices are always what people are willing to wait for and what others are willing to shell out. It's extra tricky on a product like ours since each one is unique - even the black finish. Though in the 1980s we made a LOT of Spoilers and Distillates in Jet Black (and many with Exploiter body shapes), most with chrome plated hardware.

Back in 2014, someone was going to sell me a black with chrome Spoiler Exploiter for $1400. The pictures were kind of sketchy, so I passed. Still kicking myself for that, but I did end up with an extraordinary Distillate.  ;D
