Hello from a recent convert!
« on: January 10, 2022, 08:23:47 PM »
Hi everybody!

My name is Ken, and I'm finally ready to post after a long time of lurking in the shadows.  I'm north of 50, and have played bass for most of the past 35 years.  I had a couple of self-imposed breaks along the way, but now I am getting every bit of playing in that I can manage.

I began wishing for an Alembic very early on.  I read a re-print of a Guitar Player article on Alembic back in 1982, and immediately decided I wanted to play one someday.  I had no exposure to the Grateful Dead at that point, but a photo of Phil playing Osage Orange was all it took to plant the seed!  I accumulated quite a few nice instruments over the years, but never had a chance to try an Alembic in person until recently.

Fast forward to 2019, when a local vintage dealer got a Spoiler in and was willing to trade it for a mid-'70s fretless Precision plus a pre-EBMM Sabre bass.  I got the better end of that deal, and haven't looked back.  I'll save the details on that bass for a Spoiler appreciation thread.  Since then, I've stumbled into a couple of more Alembics to round out my sonic options.  Again, I will save the details for other threads (with photos, I promise!).

Anyway, I am glad to finally be here and I look forward to participating!

Ken

Ken,
Welcome to the camp!
Multiple Alembics?  You are in good company.  We always appreciate pics.

Keep it low and stay outta treble!

Hi, Ken!

Jeff here!

Nice to meet you: I’m very new to Alembic and still looking around, but loving what I’ve heard in a bass I found here so far! Too many great options! Lol

Yes, welcome Ken. It's good to have new members especially those with new alembics.
The sound of Alembic is medicine for the soul!

Welcome Ken. The Spoiler is a great foot in the Alembic door. I believe that so much that I have two - a four string and a five string. Of course, you'll find that variety is, indeed, the spice of life, which is why Alemmbic makes different models. Start saving.

Thanks everybody for the warm welcome!

Start saving.

Great advice!  I've already started greasing the skids on that one with my wife.  I've been dealing with chronic nerve entrapment in my left shoulder, so my argument is that ordering the lightest short scale bass Alembic has ever made could keep me playing as time goes on...
