Get Back - Beatles on Disney
« on: December 26, 2021, 04:40:49 PM »
Bill mentioned this in the Listening thread, but I thought it might deserve its own thread.  I spent the $7.99 for one month of Disney Plus today and watched the first part.  Loved it.  I've seen comments and reviews elsewhere on the web, and people have lots of different reactions; but I'm trying to accept it, and enjoy it, as it is.

In my view, at the very least, it is an important historical document.  And personally, I find it fascinating to watch the songs in their nascent forms.  So, after the first of three parts, highly recommended.

I am not really a Beatles fan.    BUT, when this first came out on Thanksgiving day I watched the first part.    I was hooked.    I would have watched it all in one sitting if it were released all the same day.

I really liked it a lot, and I love how Billy Preston walked in and saved the day.     Folks have lots of different theories on why they broke up.    I have my own too.    I don't want to give it away, but it seems pretty obvious after watching all three parts.

If you have not started watching this, go watch it now.

I've watched the full series and would recommend it as well. Unlike Let It Be which to me focused on all the negatives Get Back shows the group's relationships to each other were a lot more dynamic and that they had what appears to be good times too. While I've always had my opinion of the individual Beatles personalities it was interesting to see how they were exercised within the group. Without going into the details of why I've often thought that a lot of the acrimony was the result of the film crew being present and while it was likely the group would still split up they would have parted on better terms.

We finished it over the weekend.   A truly wonderful watch!   No complaints, no boogers, I can’t imagine it being done any better.  For those like Senior Management and myself who grew up with these guys, it was pure joy to watch.   I can’t recommend it strongly enough.

Just finished Part 1, and I totally concur with the plaudits above.

But there is something that no one has mentioned.  As the resident roadie, I feel moved to point out that I saw one Valco-looking amp, one Ampeg, 4 Fenders - and not a single, solitary Vox in sight!

Watching this makes it for me all the more remarkable that by the end of the very next year All Things Must Pass had been released.

Indeed - an opus which I would argue is hands down the finest post-Beatles album by a Beatle.

I'm on the third one, just before the concert. I'm saving that for when dad and I can watch together. I would have watched all the unedited film too. Ten minutes in to the second one I was crying.

Just finished Part 2; what struck me tonight was that (at least according to Peter Jackson's edit) the band handled the artistic stuff, Glyn Johns handled the technical, and George Martin stood around getting richer and famouser for doing Z S & N.

Peter (who is feeling reinforced in his opinion of which Beatle was the fatal problem.........)

If I remember correctly, “Magic Alex” originally put the studio together at Apple and totally effed it up.   Martin came in, re-did it, and saved the day.  I suspect Johns may have been running the sessions, but George still had hands on the equipment.

I got the impression George M got the equipment sent over; Johns, Parsons, et al put it together.  Every shot I've seen of Martin, he's standing/sitting/lying on the floor reading the paper; I have yet to see him touch a knob or utter a word in re the music.  The concert, yes, but not the album being recorded in front of him. But, as I said, that may be Jackson's editing, and I do share your suspicion.

Just finished it.

What can I say, except, would any of us have spent our lives doing what we've done without them?  I think not.

Just finished part 1.  It really shows how their timeless and fabulous songs were constructed and also their individual skills. Paul McC really motored with his left hand.  Looking forward to the rest.

The Beatles’ rooftop concert is coming to IMAX, for one night, exactly 53 years after the iconic performance at Apple Corps headquarters in London, England, on Jan. 30.

The film features 60-minutes of archival footage edited down from 50 hours of recorded material captured by Michael-Lindsey Hogg and restored and edited by Peter Jackson.

“I’m thrilled that the rooftop concert from The Beatles: Get Back is going to be experienced in IMAX, on that huge screen,” Jackson said in a press release. “It’s The Beatles’ last concert, and it’s the absolute perfect way to see and hear it.”

The performance includes Beatles classics like “Get Back,” “Don’t Let Me Down,” “I’ve Got a Feeling,” “One After 909” and “Dig A Pony.” Following the premiere, a global theatrical engagement will run from Feb. 11-13 with the complete docuseries being released on Blu-ray and DVD in the U.S. on Feb. 8.
