Shop Night Instruments

What's the "legal" status of shop night basses and guitars? Are they eligible to be serviced at the Mothership? Are they recognized as Alembics or just quasi-Alembics? Are they entitled to registration, or not since they lack serial numbers?

I own a fretless Spoiler 4 (pictured on the right) that is a "shop-night bass" and let me say its just fantastic, of the exact same quality as any other Alembic I've held. It can go from jaco (bridge pup) to almost mingus (neck pup) and everything inbetween. And it doesn't hurt that Jason Newsted used to own it. I wouldn't have bought it from a fellow club member if it wasn't, but it being my first serious fretless it has opened up a lot of new doors for me, so now I'm very happy to have it it for its inborn qualities, not just its incidental qualities.

If you want, post pics of your shop night instruments. A few years ago I saw an awesome 4 string double-p pickup Spoiler in alpine white on Reverb that looked just divine, always wanted to know what happened to it (and how it sounds).

As for registration, I don’t think so. As to service, I’m anxiously awaiting delivery of a shop night Series I on which Ron just completed an electronics upgrade.

Keep in mind that when Alembic started, they were modifying the instruments of other manufacturers so servicing a bass made by one of their employees using Alembic parts is no sweat AND they give just as much attention to these instruments as the ones that are officially Alembic.

Both of those are slick.  That 5 string Distillate!  Wow!
