Gig bag photo fitment information.
« on: September 15, 2021, 02:12:42 PM »
As the subject of Alembic instruments and gig bag recommendations comes up fairly often I thought I would start a thread where folks can list their own gig bags with photos of their instruments in them for others to get an idea of fitment.

I bought a Reunion Blues Continental Voyager for taking basses with me when we travel or camp in the trailer. I did not take any exterior shots as the company website has better photos than I could take. While not a hardshell case the exterior shell uses a material that is hard though flexible and is well padded. Plenty of protection for my needs.

The case is a little long for both my Brown Bass/Series I which I expected due to them being short scales but also my fretless Orion 4 string. As you can see in the photos the case reinforcement for the peg heads is short of the tuning peg for the E string. Even the ubiquitous Fender displayed on the company website shows the same thing. Since I always use a folded terrycloth towel or cloth diaper under and over the head stock this doesn't bother me too much.

My short scale small body basses both have the Brown Bass body which fits pretty well in the case. The fit for the Orion body which isn't as wide is not as good which ended up with me rearranging some of the padding. Reunion Blues also sells the bumper pads in sets of two and I intend to get two more to better fit the Orion.

My favorite gig bag was custom made by Glenn Cronkhite for my Starfire. It was quite pricey (twice what I originally paid for the bass) and took a while for delivery but the leather ones last a lifetime. Sadly, Glenn retired, but his company lives on. I'm not sure about their current policies about making custom bags, but they have an insane number of templates available and I'm sure that they have some that fit Alembics.

I made sure that the pocket was big enough to fit an old school blue power supply and cables.

As an aside, Glenn founded Reunion Blues.

The Access Stage Four Bass Bag is well made and protects my bass quite well.  All sides are rigid and the inside is well padded.  It's a couple inches longer than a Stanley Clarke, but the alternatives were too snug.  I carved a piece of 2" polyethylene (PE) foam using sharp kitchen knives to fit the neck carves.  Wedged into the case, it keeps the instrument from sliding around.  It's covered with common velvet from the local craft store which is stuck onto the PE with spray adhesive.  I let it stink up the garage for a few days before deployment.  I also put a wee bit of shim under the neck pad to raise the head - easy.  It's not as svelte as a case from Serek, but the protection is far better.  And, it fits in my car!

Mono M80 for two basses (can get heavy) :-)

Note: IIrc the Series II Europa has a slightly larger body than the "standard" Europa.

The Series I (which I sold a couple of years ago) is in tight, I don't think 5+ string basses in this shape will fit.
Edit: except for the Spoiler (32 inch) all basses are 34 inch Longscale
