Hello World
« on: September 14, 2021, 08:11:03 AM »
Greetings, all.
I am the happy new owner of an Alembic bass. I have, for years, seen them,  but never thought I would actually own one. I always thought of them as a fantacy, like owning a Bently. Recently, a convergence of situations made it possible and I acquired a 1994 Epic five string.
I will admit I had always thought that perhaps the price for any top tier bass was predicated on name and pretty. I have several great Fender, G&L, and Breedlove basses that play well and sound good. But when I got this bass in my hands I was first amazed at the construction quality. When I first started playing it, I was convinced that this, in fact, is a superior instrument.

My first observation was how even the volume  is across all the string. I have always been a passive bass player, except for my ABGs, but I found the controls are laid well and give me a tone pallet that I wasn't expecting. I was also impressed with the condition of the bass. It has a completion date of 1/6/1995 and there is not a ding nor a scratch on it. There is minimal fret wear and the case is spotless. My guess is it spent a lot of time in a closet. It did arrive with a case of fret sprouts, but it currently in the hands of a luthier I trust and respect.

I have been playing since 1963. I started part time while I was in the Navy and went full time when I got out. I was primarily a performing musician and have only gotten into recording recently. I'm back to part time these days and intend to keep playing as long as I can.

I'm here to explore and learn. I will also be watching for a four string with a price and condition like the five string I just acquired.

Welcome Dave,

Thanks for your Navy service.  And we're glad you're digging that Epic.  I know, the evenness is really something!

Dave,
I’m late to the party… welcome to the camp.  There is a good contingency of Alembic owners in Texas.

Your introduction was succinct,  those of us that own them feel it every time we pick them up and plug in.
They almost play themselves and as you noted their electronics are incredible,  nuances from where your plucking/picking position prove it - shift a little closer to the bridge and ‘pow’ you have opened up another tonal palette!

Have fun, beware of GAS.
