Spyder Bass Strap Locks?

Curious what is being used - ordered Schallers and screw is much thicker than current one and strongly prefer to not drill into this bass.

I am using the Fender rubber washers and they work ok but not the same peace of mind.

I guess you got the new-style S-Locks with the studs that screw into the wood? You can still use the studs that go with the old-style Schaller locks, with a separate screw. Didn't the bass come with those?

I have the newer style, at least I believe so, and the screw is fixed on the Schaller. The strap buttons on the bass are a thinner screw than those of the S locks that I received from Schaller.

The problem I've run into is the stud wears over the years and doesn't hold the pin securely such that the strap can come undone if bass is lifted and removing pressure from the strap. I'm on my 3rd set of studs on my Jazz Bass due to this.

I think the new style stud is all steel but the older version like I have are plated brass. If it were me I'd upgrade. If you aren't comfortable increasing the hole size yourself I'm sure a local luthier could handle it.

I now only get the new style locks. The hex key is excellent and there are no issues with stripping the Phillips head the old ones had. If need be I use the old toothpick mod and so far I haven't had to snug the locks like I had to on the old style. To me it is a great design improvement.
