advice wanted for recording yourself on a tablet
« on: August 04, 2021, 04:59:07 AM »
not sure if i posted this in the right forum, mods please move it if you see fit.

i have friends and family scattered hither and yon who want to hear me play.  i've got a samsung galaxy S7 that i use to record myself and then post on youtube for them.  is there a simple way to do this without investing in a load of equipment and software that yields listenable results?  i've tried just putting the tablet in selfie mode and going for it with mixed results.  the main issues that i've run into are:

1) starting and stopping the recording without taking my hands off my instrument or hitting the wrong button and putting the tablet into some other mode that i don't want.
2) knowing what my recording levels are. i can't tell if i'm overloading whatever the tablet uses for a microphone while i'm setting up.
3) a simple way to edit the video so i can cut out the inevitable flubs at the start and stop while i fiddle with my gear.

at the risk of exposing my playing style to the world, i've got a short clip of me on the mighty fretless doing one of my warmup finger dances.  i can tell when i hit the low bass notes that i'm blowing something in the signal chain out. the tablet was set up close to my amp so i could get a good camera angle (if there is such a thing with me) of myself.  maybe an external bluetooth mic that i can place further from my rig?
the flash of the lamp filament at the end is apparently from me hitting the front/rear camera mode icon when i was going for the stop button and so i filmed the table lamp that the tablet was leaning against.  sheesh...

Been down...now i'm out!

I highly recommend this:

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MV88--shure-mv88-digital-stereo-condenser-microphone-for-ios

It is a condenser mic that plugs into the socket of  your device. There is also an easy to use App from Shure for recording. You can set levels. Save settings, etc. Very user friendly as well.

SHoot, just realized you are using a Samsung. This is for iOS devices. But maybe there is an adaptor or a similar product designed for Galaxy.

Also, this:

I used to have one of the first gens and it was pretty cool. Works great for what it is.

Plug your bass into this deceive and connect your tablet or phone. You can also connect several other things simultaneously.
Pretty slick little machine.

I have been using an audio interface - in my case, a Zoom H6, though that's probably way more than you need - 6 inputs, I got it to record my band, but it turned out to work great for making videos! Something like the Roland mixer that Jon posted would probably work great too.

I also use iMovie to edit my videos - not sure what's available in the PC world but hopefully someone will chime in - maybe even something that's already on your phone!
