Wanted Guild BiSonic Pickup
« on: July 30, 2021, 12:30:08 PM »
Hey Now, new here, thought I might try...I see a lot of discussion on upgrading Guild Starfire basses by adding Novak Dark Star pickups, etc.  I recently acquired a 1967 Starfire II that had the bridge pickup changed to a '70's vintage Fender Telecaster bass humbucker.  They used the BiSonic wood ring that's still there.  Does anybody have a vintage BiSonic pickup they removed and would be willing part with??  I have a MIK re-issue to use for now to restore the bass.  I may try a Novak but I'm happy with the original BiSonic sound for this bass.  Thanks.  email if you have one...

Well, as a stopgap, you might get one of the Guild reissue pickups. I heard a shootout between it and a Novak and Dark Star and I thought it sounded quite nice. Should cost a lot less than other options and once you find a vintage one, you can replace it.

Thanks, As I said, I have the Guild MIK in there now and it sounds really good.  Everything else on the bass is original or replaced with old parts, just want to get an old one to match and increase its value when I do finally sell it.  I'm currently refinishing the bass that was sanded stripped by a previous owner to natural.  Using Mohawk Red Mahogany lacquer, really close to original.  They left the sides original, just sanded the front, neck and back, guess they wanted it to look like Phil's Big Brown....so if anyone has an original BS-1, willing to pay fair price...

I had the original Guild /Hagstrom Bi-Sonics on my 1965 Starfire. I  foolishly sold those  in poor judgement quite a long time ago when I did not know any better :)

Currently, on a Berry Oakley tribute Jazz bass that I assembled, I have A Curtis Novak Bi-Sonic with the Coil switching option . It is amazing !
I prefer Alembic Pick-ups before any other, HOWEVER as a passive pickup the Curtis Novak Bi-Sonic is exemplary .
I also have played and inspected one of the NEW Guild reissue Starfire Pickups , they are OK for the price, but I would prefer the Curtis Novak choice in such a genre of pickups .

Quick update!  I found a vintage Bisonic that was retrofitted into a 1970 Guild Jetstar bass that originally had a 70's Guild Humbucker.  To get lower action with a Fender P-bass bridge, they removed the raised chrome mounting ring and used a home made flat bezel out of thin pickguard material, probably long ago in the 80's...So here I am left with a working 60's Bisonic missing the chrome ring!  So on a chance, I called Guild parts department and asked if the chrome ring from a new reissue could be bought separate...They are identical to the originals, I have some new pickups and the bezel is a perfect match.  When the rep heard what I wanted it for, he said, yeah, we have lots of trashed damaged during shipping basses and I can get you one no problem, he even refused any sort of payment and sent it to 2-day air at Guild's expense!  I did tell him I bought one of the Newark Street reissue Starfires a few years ago....All I had to do was glue the ring he separated from a new pickup onto my vintage one, perfect fit.  I used a model cement called Goo, similar to Gorilla glue.  I told the guy I would pay the favor forward and pass something like a guitar part onto someone else....good to know info anyone modifying a Startfire and may need some oddball part...BTW, I restored the Jetstar with a pair of the re-issue Bisonics and it too sounds fantastic, I put the repaired vintage one in my '67 that had one new and one old pickup, now its all original....

That's pretty cool that Guild was willing to do that. Tip my hat to them.  8)

(another vote for the reissued Bisonics... I have both, in a set of Starfire basses made 50 years apart. It's remarkable how much alike they are. Same/Same? No, but what I would call very faithful reproduction. Good on you for restoring that Jetstar with them!)

Here's the Jetstar restored with two Bisonics.  Guild never made them this way, the ones with a Bisonic neck pickup had a small single coil bridge pickup.  The two pickup models after 1970 had the Guyild Humbuckers.  This is closer to Phil Lesh's EBO with two bisonics used 69-70 prior to Big Brown!  Sounds fantastic even with new Guild re-issue Bisonics.  Also next to my restored '67 Starfire! Bass was stripped back and front when I got it, but the sides were original red so I sprayed top and back over with Mohawk cherry red clear lacquer...another great sounding player!

Nice. I used to have a black '73 JS II. Totally stock and original except for the case. Great little bass. It was my resident "flat wound" bass. I miss it, but it just didn't get used enough to keep.
