Jazzyvee Gigs 2021
« on: July 08, 2021, 02:31:02 PM »
I have a couple of gigs come in for 2021.
The first will be my first time doing a full gig on double bass (classico). It's with a band called La Cigale whom I joined a few weeks before the UK lockdown in 2020. The band plays Brazillian style Jazz and it's in an outdoor area of a pub just outside the city centre on 25/07/2021 no idea what time yet though.

The second is at a festival I played a few years back, Camp Bestival, with Musical Youth. We are there 30th July 2021 and this time we are on the main stage which is going to be a great experience. Too early to decide which bass to take to that one.
Level 42 are on the same festival but not sure if they are on the same day as us. If so then I may be able to get some geeky alembic back stage chat with Mark King.

We are not showing on the lineup yet but hopefully it will get updated soon.

I'm curious Jazzy... for gigs with bands you play with, for instance Musical Youth, and the more recent La Cigale... are they booked by a management agency, or self managed? Just wonder how this works in the U.K. I have had a mixed bag of experiences with management agencies over here. Most of which were a good while ago. HGB was represented by one for a while, but it reached a point where we could not commit to as many dates as they needed, which was too bad, just the reality for workin' guys. They still pitch us the occasional discard.

Just wondering.

For musical youth, i think there are a few inputs for gigs. The band leader deals with the admin and he has various agents pitching gigs. i don't know if he is legally signed to any management company or agency. But some places contact him directly.
La Cigale are a small band and the band leader deals with gigs. I haven't gigged with them since joining as covid lockdown affected the scene, so my upcoming gig with them will be my first. When I was touring with Apache Indian, he had a manager who sorted out the gigs and tours.

I saw that Musical Youth are playing here in the US in September. Is it just the singers with backing tracks? If it was the full band and you could come that would be great!

If it was like the last time a couple of years back it will be the lead singer, keyboard player and a local band but. We have rehearsal at the weekend so will find out for sure.

Festival with Musical Youth sounds like it will be a good, and fun, gig.  Would be cool if they brought you to the US but totally understandable for them not to have the kind of budget to bring a full band.

I sent it via Facebook - the one I saw was at Mountain Winery in Saratoga, CA (near San Jose) - that's the one closest to me, but looks like there are 2 other shows too.

I think one of the constraints at the moment is the cost of the USA work permit which i believe was £3000 each the last time those two went. So quite a lot for a promoter to recover from a 7 pc band unless there are enough gigs booked.

Sunday's gig with the Brazillian band went OK. A few scary moments when the key to some of the songs were different to the ones i had learnt.  But I survived with my dignity in tact.
Also the few video's i managed to listen to so far my intonation was pretty respectable for most of the gig. Hopefully the dodgy ones don't end up online.
But that's a starting point with a relaxed and modest audience without seasoned jazz musicians in attendance.

I have another double bass gig with the Brazillian band this afternoon at a pub called The Spotted Dog.
Hope i have developed enough technique to play for around 2hrs. I have a Schertler Unico, 180w, acoustic instrument combo which at home sounds great, so i plan to take it and see how it works at soundcheck and have a powered extension cab just in case it can't do it alone.

Probably my shortest gig ever tonight at a Black History event.
Singer, percussionist, acoustic guitarist and me on bass. A 10 minute set, two songs, Ain’t no stoppin’ us now and Just the Two of us. It will be a rare gig for my purple Elan 4+ bass. Hope it leads to more session gig. The whole event is being filmed for later streaming.
