John "Marmaduke" Dawson's prototype Alembic Guitar
« on: June 06, 2021, 04:30:31 PM »
Part of my recent guitar education (think Alembic, gone Country) had me revisit this guitar deep in some old threads. There isn't a lot of information here about it, other than occasional references to the "Marmaduke Guitar". I thought it deserved its own Artist Showcase Thread in case more came along. It certainly represents some formative design that carried right on. (hat-tip to Cozmik Cowboy for posting this picture on one of those old NRPS threads)

A Brompton's article lists it as having been made in 1971, which I suppose would make it a true prototype. Note the full bird tailpiece. Dickie Betts '74 guitar, and that mystery Omega-cut guitar shared that detail. And I think Heironymous' doubleneck too? The inline pattern headstock made a comeback tour later. Lots of cool details about this guitar we see made it to production later on.

This young feller has been spotted playing the guitar a couple times in recent years. How cool that is, that someone is still playing it!

So add to it here.

That’s a wonderful guitar, a few modifications over time.  It appears to be owned by a person who goes by the name of Madscientistofsound on Instagram.  It’s great that they seem to bring it out and have lots of people playing and experiencing it, and keeping the music flowing through it :)

I follow that guy on Instagram too.   I follow because of the guitar.   I have messaged him a few times,  but have not gotten too much info out of him.

Of course I asked about the David Torbert bass.   He had no clue.
