SC signature deluxe / Signature on headstock?
« on: May 26, 2021, 10:31:09 AM »
Howdy all!

Just an Alembic newb with some questions about a bass..I don’t see a lot of SC deluxe’s with his signature inlaid in the headstock. Was this a short lived design and is there any other significant differences that make these from this era different than the rest? (Other than above). The one I’m looking at is from the 90’s. And is this less desirable than the standard no signature model? Just doing the research before dropping the $$.

Thanks all!

The original Clarke, King, and Jimmy Johnson models had the stickers under the finish. The standard neck sizes were different on the early models, 1.75 x 2.25 (nut x 24th fret), aka "standard taper." Now we use the "narrow taper" on the Clarke models, 1.5 x 2.15. That's the major differences. There is a slgiht dip in volume when the pan control is at the detent on the early ones, but the electronics can be upgraded.

I've seen quite a few of the 'signed' Stanley Clarke Signatures, and I think maybe a couple of the Mark Kings. But those signed Jimmy Johnson Signatures must be like hen's teeth.

There was this one on Reverb a while back, got flipped a couple times, that was made with appointments pretty similar to Jimmy's old '76 Series bass, Signature electronics, marked JJ, but not with the decal- https://reverb.com/item/38975886-1988-alembic-jimmy-johnson-signature-bass-rare-collectible-masterbuilt-made-in-the-usa?show_sold=true
Seriously, do you happen to remember any?

Hi GB...

If you are considering the Macassar Ebony SCS currently on Reverb, please note that the seller says he is open to offers, strongly suggest you offer less than asked, the same bass was listed here locally 2 weeks ago on Craig's list for $6,000 and appears to have sold. You should be able to get it for a better price, there is a good chance he beat the previous seller up on price but even if he didn't there is certainly "wiggle room" to negotiate.
Below is a recent prior thread about the bass... Good luck with your search and purchase.
