Will the Custom Quote Generator ever be back on line?
« on: March 10, 2021, 02:38:07 PM »
I've been getting a "404 Not Found" error for what must be going on two years now whenever I try any of the links to the Custom Quote Generator (http://alembic.com/cgi-bin/quote/quote)

Is there a timeframe for when that feature will be updated and available?

Thanks.

Not sure where it falls on the Master List of to-do items, but Mica mentions an updated version of the CQG was in the plans in this thread last Fall- https://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=25840.0

I seem to remember that you favored medium-scale small Standard basses... hash it out here maybe? ;)

heh-heh... enabler:)

Part of the appeal of the Custom Quote Generator was that I could see the impact of lots of individual small decisions without wasting someone's time demonstrating just how indecisive I can be. But I guess it's also a fair point that not every option was captured in that form and so eventually there would still have to be some hashing out with a live Alembic employee.

But let me put this one out there: Is it still possible to order a Series bass with the pickup selector switch in the old (late 1970s/early 1980s) location by the lower cutaway, and with the old style trim ring around it? And if so, is there an upcharge for that option?

(And yes, I'm well aware of the ostensible reason that switch's location was changed. Shouldn't be an issue for me.)

Yes you can still get the pickup selector in the old position. If by old style trim ring you mean a brass mounting plate the answer is yes.

Brown Bass still comes with those. Yeah, I'd guess that would be a minor tweak.

I like where you're headed - please continue.  ;D

(if it further enables you, I'm carrying a Custom Quote around in my shirt pocket daily, for a very 1970's-inspired guitar. Waiting... for a sign... a hand to reach down from a cloud, or something)

Ah-ha, I just found a Series I in Flame Walnut with Standard Omega Body, JJ Tailpiece, 70's Pickup Selector Placement image on the alembic site, so yeah, definitely still in their bag of tricks!

Next wish-list question (which I think I may have asked a couple years ago, don't think I saw an answer)... Can Alembic do both an elbow bevel and a tummy cut on a small body Series I, or do the electronics take up too much space in the body?

Thanks.

I have no expertise on woodwork but I guess it would be possible,  if they could fit the electronics in the lower half of the body and left the top half with a solid core. Not sure how that would affect balance though.
The sound of Alembic is medicine for the soul!

We can do a modest tummy cut and a fairly regular elbow cut on a standard build. If we make the body a little thicker (1.80 instead of 1.65), we can move the preamp card to the same cavity as the electronics harness, and then carve as large of a tummy and elbow cut as you like as Vince suggests. The balance really won't care if you take mass out of the middle (hollow) or the outsides (tummy and elbow contouring).

A little extra mass in the body from the added thickness might be a good thing for a medium-scale on a small Standard. (if that is indeed what you're planning)
