70's Series Bass with Replaced wing - Anyone remember?
« on: March 08, 2021, 12:05:10 PM »
I have been trying to find a thread I saw last year sometime regarding a 70's Series I that had a wing replaced.
The bass was a reddish hue, looking like vermillion or something similar. The replaced wing was a different wood than that original and was lacking veneers but it was stained or painted to look like the original wing. Anyone know what I am talking about?
I could swear that I saw the thread about the bass in question here on the Alembic forum but perhaps I am mistaken.
Anyhoo, after spending nearly 2 hours scouring the forum trying to locate the thread I decided it would be best to ask for help.
Thanks so much in advance.

There was one with the top replaced, pretty obvious when you look at it, and another one (lefty) that had the upper horn shaped like the lower horn and everything switched to righty, which was less obvious (apart from the weird set of the horns).

^ Neither of which is the one Greg posted just now.

Thanks for the fast reply. This one was not painted white. It was a reddish color. Possibly redwood or cocobolo??
I can't remember what the veneer was on the original wing but the wing that had been replaced was maple and finished on the top and bottom to look like it had veneers like the original wing. But it was just a solid piece of Maple in disguise.

It's the same bass; it was refinished a deep/dark color to hide the body wing replacement. The truss rod was replaced too, later.

Gotcha! Yeah, I think you are right... with those details you speak of? but where is the other thread? I can't find it anywhere.

That's it! Thanks so much!
I must have seen the photos on talkbass, CL, or ebay and confused that thread with the one here.

That was a cool old bass that was successfully rescued. I enjoyed Bruce's repair thread too. I love a good rescue story.

The one Adiaan mentioned above, #77-934 "Switch-hitter"... it's still out there, and apparently no one outside of here has realized it's rebuilt status. (at the listed price, it's not in any danger of moving either.) Nevertheless, somebody somewhere did an outstanding job bringing that poor thing back from the brink.
