(x) Serial # Request: 03SY13148
« on: January 09, 2021, 02:18:33 AM »
Hi, I may have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to purchase my dream guitar. Can you please confirm this is a valid Alembic serial # and provide any history  you may have available for it?

Thanks,
Rob

Welcome to the club!

Another member recently acquired Spyder 03SY13110, where 03 is the year of birth 2003, SY is for the Spyder model, and the remainder is the running serial number since 1972. http://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=25929.0

Pending official confirmation from Mica of course, but it certainly seems like a valid serial number.

I just took delivery of my Spyder and after a quick search on how to run the electrics on it, I have to say this is  the most amazing bass I have ever played or owned. It fits beautifully and the sound is great. I have been following Alembic for years and my dream has finally come true!

I look forward to hearing and sharing more tips and stories in the future!

Haha. The first songs I played were The Real Me and Boris The Spider. I'm sure my efforts would have at least brought a chuckle from the late great man. Now if only I could afford that Hiwatt stack.

Hi Robert,

Looking at the file, it's _almost_ a typical Spyder bass:

top: Flame Maple
body: Walnut
back: Flame Maple
neck: 7-piece Maple and Purpleheart
scale: 34"
fingerboard: Ebony fretless, custom width 1.75 x 2.375
inlays: Maple fretlines
side markers: red LEDs
peghead shape: V
peghead veneers: Bookmatched Vermilion
body shape: Exploiter
pickups: AXY
controls: "Anniversary" volume x2, filter x2, Q-switch x2, rotary pickup selector switch, LEDs on/off, mono/stereo output
originally made for: Bass Northwest, Seattle, WA
birthday: October 13, 2003

The original owner was from Wisconsin. Looks like we replaced the case in 2004. It's not noted was the defect was, but it looks like something was wrong with it.

I bought my bass under full disclosure from the seller that it was manufactured as fretless, but he had it 'fretted' (is that a verb) by a prominent local Luthier. Since I'm not a collector, I have been 100% satisfied. I'm sure a few people will take umbrage at such modification, but I've gone over this with a powerful magnifiying glass and I think the workmanship would please the original builders!

I've been working hard at learning to extend my arm farther as the neck has a bit more reach than my old Fender Jazz, but the sound is incredible, and the tonal control is truly genius. I'm looking forward to many more hours of fun and impressing my friends and fellow musicians with my purchase, if not my newly honed skills!

I've also been watching that 1979 YouTube video of John Entwistle playing The Real Me on his Alembic just for inspiration (he makes it look so easy!).

Thank you Alembic!
