I Miss Live Music
« on: January 03, 2021, 11:12:15 AM »
So Senior Management is transferring all the important dates from the old 2020 calendar to the new 2021 calendar.   She pointed out that the last time we saw live music was last January 11th when a bunch of us went to Terrapin Crossroads to see our own StephenR play with Cryptical.   Too long.   I can’t wait for all this to be in the rear view mirror.   I NEED MUSIC!

Couldn't agree more.  Yesterday I had a gig come in for June 2021 and would you believe that I was supposed to be going to a show that day!!!  Anyway, the gig is being moved so I have at least one, hopefully. But what a coincidence and let's hope we are all back to normal by then.

Blues jam, 1st Weds of Feb, I do believe.  Dreadfully missing it - and the every-Thus folkie open mic at the brew-pub, and the summer-weds-evening "Music At The Mansion", and the occasional "intimate" concert at Ax-In-Hand.......I need them all back!!!!!!!

Hard to believe that show was almost a year ago! We did catch one other show after that actually - Steve Gadd Band at Yoshi's with our very own Jimmy Johnson!

Bill... I think you need to refresh your memory, seems you were also at the Yoshi's gig with Harry.  Maybe "senior management" didn't write it on last year's calendar because only you went?  Makes me feel better that the last bass player you saw play live was Jimmy J...not me  :)

The only show we went to last year was Freestone Peaches at the Ashkenaz in late February. Definitely missing gigging and going to shows!

Admittedly I am also deeply missing the live music scene.

Generally I hold a disdain for large groups of people.  But you go to the right show, with a Proper Fan Base and it is like being with family!  Just listening to Lake Street Dive at work here and reminiscing about seeing them two summers ago and how absolutely joyous it was.

Stephen and Harry:  you are, of course, correct.  Steve Gadd band with Wolf & Harry was in February, as I now recall.  (If Senior Management isn’t attending, it doesn’t go on the calendar.)

And don’t sell yourself short, Stephen.   If I could only see one concert and had to pick between Steve Gadd Band and Cryptical ... well... Jimmy, Steve and the guys were outstanding, but there is nothing like a Grateful Dead show!  It would be great if I get to see both again this year.

Here in the Broadway corridor with all the honky-tonks, there is some live music (and of course all of this is aggravated even further with the bombing around the corner on 2nd Avenue), but the clubs are under orders to Last Call at 10:30 and empty by 11.  The Opry is playing to socially-distanced / 20% capacity crowds, as are the Titans (and soon the Predators) when in town.  But then again, at least half the venues have never re-opened.

Then as well, it's chilling to go to past any of the lots of the bus companies, and all the tour buses are parked cheek to jowl, as they have been all year.  You couldn't fit another one in without dropping it in with a Manitowoc crain.  The 18-wheelers for lights and sound are all hauling fruit from Florida, or other commercial freight.  The sound and light contractors are packed floor to ceiling with everything that's NOT on the road, and the local SIR outpost thinks its a big day if they have more than two deliveries or pickups.

And yet the virus is just roaring around the country with a vengeance.  I won't be able to attend my only niece's wedding in three weeks in New Orleans, it's too dangerous, and I've simply had to chalk it up to she'll be married far longer than this menace will be around, so I'll see them down the road sometime.  Me and the Mrs. are both 65, so hopefully our vaccinations will occur soon.  Couldn't be soon enough for me.  This has been one of the hardest years I've lived through, just as it has been for so many others, and I didn't even have fires or hurricanes (or tornadoes ) to dodge.

Joey,

Too bad about not making it to New Orleans.    It is dangerous here, but then there is the virus too!   Ha!    If you do get this way, I can show you some Alembics.

I was fortunate.   Since I am in 6 bands, I get to play out pretty often.    Not so much now this month,   but in Nov and Dec I was averaging playing 2 gigs a week.

The last band I saw live was Dream Theater back in February. The Stranglers postponed their show as did Thunder (march and may respectively) but the way things are looking over here I'm not expecting them to go ahead.  Checking my diary, I last played a show at the start of march and that was with my Blues trio. My hard rock band haven't played since early february. I've checked and it looks like I cancelled 25 dates through 2020. I doubt we'll get any bookings till at least July this year and most likely none at all. Roll on 2022 etc.....

A year ago last night was the Steve Gadd show I saw with Bill TGO & Wolf (and Will and others as I found out later)! Hoping to see live music before the next year elapses!

Hey, I've met three of those guys!  Fine folks one & all (and I'm betting Harry is, too).
