Yes - I read that the guy who shot him said that he did it for self-glory and is really sorry. He said he wishes he had been in a State that had the death penalty. I am not sure how that makes it any more acceptable. Yoko Ono doesn't want him released as he may do it again to someone else who doesn't deserve it.
Good to remember the legend. (ps. Waiting to get McCartney III being released soon - another legend)
