(x) Series I SSC 77 758
« on: November 03, 2020, 11:39:21 AM »
Hello Mica and everyone here.

I have seen this bass online for a long time, and while the condition of the bass is somewhat questionable (shop stating the neck is 'too strong'), I just pulled a trigger after several months of consideration.

Unfortunately, the bass didn't have any build info: I was hoping you could share some information.

Thank you very much!!   And I am proud to be one of the first one to have the wood selection done on this club when you made my last bass back in 2002.

Hi Takeo, nice to see you here again! Here's what I found in the file for your bass.

neck: Maple, Beech, Purpleheart
scale: 30.75" short
fingerboard: Ebony
inlays: Mother of pearl
peghead veneers: Zebrawood

There's no other details, but please share pictures when you can :)

Mica-san,

Thank you very much!!
After some close check, I passed on this bass since the neck was just too strong (it had very heavy gauge strings, and it was barely straight) since I like using lighter gauge.

I passed this info to the shop, they'll use this to a good use.

Now, they have a nice medium scale Series 1....

Again, thank you!

Takeo-san, is that medium-scale you speak of, a walnut one, #80-1686? If so, it is a beautiful instrument, and a very close relative of my #80-1684. Good Luck!

Ed-san,

Yes, exactly!!   How did you know?  Has this bass been 'around' much?

I got the details of the bass, it's very nice condition with all original stuff, build record shows 'gaboon ebony' for the fingerboard... never heard of it, anything special or just another name for ebony??

Takeo-san, I spotted this bass on ebay a few days ago, (probably listed by a reseller, and not the shop you have seen it in) and it caught my attention because it has not been seen around. Also, as mentioned, it is a very close relative to my Series I, which is only two numbers older and also medium-scale. Those were some very special instruments. I hope you can secure a fair price to own that one, it looks very nice!

Gaboon Ebony is a very dark black strain of African Ebony... high grade, and quite expensive now. It is interesting that this was included in the build record.
