I have seen a post on facebook where a guy has converted his MK deluxe bass into a Spyder replica.
It looks like he has made a good job of it but, taking a bandsaw to bought alembic takes some courage.
He is now looking to find some anniversary electronics to complete the project.

Arghh! - that is really brave ( but then, the only thing I can do is change the strings!! - oh apart from a slight lowering of the action on one side which for me was traumatic).

I saw the original bass and the completed project last night, but I did not see those "build in process" pics. Definitely brave, but it looks like he did a nice job.

that's awesome!  Not for the faint of heart, for sure.

when i saw the title, it cast my mind back to years ago on the dudepit where a guy posted pictures of what i think was a new series I that somehow got run over in its case by the equipment van.  i recall that it got broken into at least 3 pieces not counting the splinters and the only thing that was salvageable out of it was the electronics and the tuners.

now, that was some graphic content!

OBTW FYI i am a *huge* pointy bass fan and that extra pointy headstock makes me jealous.  I miss my pointy bass :-(

Am I the only one who is wondering where those beautiful maple-on-mahogany body wings went?   ???

I applaud the work. Not sure I'd have cut up what looks to have been a pretty nice MK to do it. Maybe a roughed-up Spoiler rehab project or something. But hey, if a dude (or dude-ette) is sure enough of their skill to saw the wings off an Alembic, I'll :-X.

That was a nice looking MK that they chopped up. I think if I wanted an Explorer body bass I would just buy one and then have both.  :)  The point on the Explorer body is kind of cool though.

You're not the only one.  ;) There's a nice project right there waiting to happen.

So what is this now. A "modified" Alembic?
The only thing that stays the same is change.

I used to have link bookmarked (alas, no longer active) of a rebuild thread of a Martin M-36 that had been run over; there was not a piece - headstock, neck, 'board, top, back, sides, bridge; everything - that was unbroken; almost of the pieces present were used in the reconstruction.  The craftsman did an amazing job - but one has to wonder how it sounded.
