Can't stay away from my Series 1

My other basses are just sitting since I got back in the Alembic fold; I've been back a couple of years now. 99% of the time when I reach for a bass it will end up being my '77 MSB. The strength of tone, the playability, and the coolness of design just blows me away every time I play it. Since Ron W. went through my preamp card the tone is even more outrageous, and I've been playing it so much I'm starting to worry about the frets, which are still ok. I'm having a blast with my bass, a welcome distraction, in spite of our present problems.

I've been spending a lot more of this summer practicing with my Series II bass so hopefully my first post lockdown gig will be the kind of gig I want to take it to.

My hands are slowly starting to come back today. Right after I get one of those shots, they feel puffy, and burn, then as that wears off, the feeling comes back to the fingers. The sensation is a something like after you hit your funny-bone. I may try to play a little bit tonight. Maybe tomorrow if it isn't there yet. I don't want to discourage myself by rushing it.


With the extra windshield time, I've been thinking about it... what to do first!?


Since #80-1684 is about to head home for the modern RF updates/upgrades and some TLC, I may switch the Jazz Rounds on #77-621 over to Jazz Flats. I dunno... I really don't want to mess with the setup on that one now that it's dialed-in perfectly. (Dave's old Series I really likes those Green Silks.  )


I just can't wait to play again.

Graeme; short answer is no.  The more I work on this solo stuff, the more I realize that it's probably beyond my abilities to pull it off as a gig.  But I enjoy practicing, and my playing is getting better, and I like the music I'm creating, even with the mistakes and sloppy fingering.

Maybe for gigs solo over a background drone sound.  George Price recently posted a short clip of him doing that on his Instagram page and not only did it sound great, it appeared to give him more freedom and space for creating phrases without having to worry about continuous playing to carry the tune.  Like the benefits horn players and solo guitarists have over the rhythm section (i.e, they can stop playing, regroup their thoughts, and the tune carries on).

Rob, I bought my first Alembic when I was 18 in 1978. Alembic still does it for me. Quality instruments, and so unique.

Rob; I do have that one tune that I uploaded a couple years ago where I was playing over a held chord, and I have some other ideas that are somewhat similar, so it is something that I want to work on some more.  However that, for me, is just as challenging; but then that's what practice is for.

Very much enjoyed just playing my old Martin D-18 with Dave and his Series II "Karma" one day. For those who haven't had the treat, Dave's approach to bass is unlike any other. I would describe it as ethereal-symphonic. Though I suspect he has few more clubs in the bag too. 

Been playing Series I "Joy" today, alternately with my Custom fretless. First time back on bass in a couple-three weeks. Feels good!
