I generally agree, but there are gig bags, and then there are gig bags! Some modern bags are more accurately described as hybrids, with hard or semi-hard sides. I have a no-longer-in-production Body Glove hard-sided bass gig bag that I use for my ‘77 Series I Long Scale 12 string. It’s a heckuva lot easier to haul around than the huge original HSC. I picked up a guitar that came in a Fender branded Reunion Blues gig bag. You know, the one they throw off the building roof? It’s actually quite protective.
And it’s not like I’m going to fly with anything but a solid HSC (except, of course, my Voyage Air acoustic with the folding neck). But if I’m going across town for a jam, I’m not hauling a bunch of equipment along with it, and the guitar will be in my hands the entire time, a nice relatively protective gig bag is a totally acceptable convenience. At least IMHO.
