Dylan was recording in NYC, when Nashville session ace Charlie McCoy got drafted into a session, and things went real good, real fast. Dylan made the usual inquiries, and was told 'that's the way they work down there, they're fast'.
Intrigued, Dylan would come to town to cut NASHVILLE SKYLINE with all the session aces of the day, like Grady Martin and so many others back then. And things went real good, real fast, and BD was very impressed. One day, there was a sudden 'can't make it' by one the hired guitarists, and Charlie got the call to sub. Drove down there like a madman, recorded the rest of the day. Afterwards, Dylan walks the room thanking the guys, and it comes up that Charlie was a sub. Dylan then realized Charlie wouldn't be back the next day, turns to the producer and tells him to cancel the no-show guy, 'I want Charlie back tomorrow'. He finished the project, and the other recordings Dylan would make in Nashville; he was the first of the 'outsiders' that came to town and began to put those players and studios on the map of the world.
CD would later remark that from that moment on, he was a 'made man', especially after that story went around town pretty quickly. Then he shows up in 'Urban Cowboy', a pretty good lick too. Member of the Grand Ole Opry and Country Music Hall of Famer, and married to Miss Hazel for over 50 years, an utter rarity in the Muzik Bidness.
A musician's musician (although he LOOKED better playing the fiddle than he sounded . . . ), and one of the great good guys in the business. He'll be missed.
