COVID-19 Tales: The World Slowly Re-Opens (maybe)
« on: June 23, 2020, 10:12:44 AM »
First gig since early March!  Outdoors, in the mountains in rural NE Pennsylvania.  Hot (87 F / 31 C), humid (80%) and thunderstorms all around us all day (that never reached us, thank God).  But, man, did it feel good to be making live music with my friends again!   I went with my MK Sig instead of a Series bass because no DS-5 meant one less thing to get off the stage if the rains came. Ditto with the 7lb Mesa Boogie TT-800 instead of my 35 lbs F-1X/SF-2 rack - easier to throw it in my car, which was parked just off stage right, in case the skies opened up.

In this part of the world (mid-Atlantic USA) it looks like all, or nearly all, gigs will be outdoors for the foreseeable future.  The bars and restaurants that host most gigs have their indoor capacity limited to 50%, which makes the economics of paying a band pretty dicey.  There are no similar crowd size limits on outdoor serving areas, though. At least for now...

One special feature of this gig was the nearly continuous semi-automatic small arms fire coming from the other side of the hill behind us that was audible during set breaks.  I chose to assume that it was the local way of expressing appreciation for the music.

I can hardly wait to get back at it. We've got one booked in a couple weeks on a nearby lake, where the concert viewing area is the water... people watch from boats, and the stage is a floating boat dock.

Since the lake is in a State Park, I doubt if there will be any celebratory small arms fire, but in Franklin County Virginia, I wouldn't rule it out either. More likely illicit untaxed whiskey, or fireworks will be more commonplace. ;D

I had around 10 gigs last 3 weeks, we had 0 new cases for 2 weeks and now borders are opened and we just got 117 new cases in 5 days... FFS, so probably lockdown is coming again... I'm talking about Croatia.
The bass player’s function, along with the drums, is to be the engine that drives the car… everything else is merely colours.

Nice man, glad you got to play! I don't have anything confirmed until September 19 at Shank Hall in Milwaukee with a Peter Gabriel tribute that I play bass for. I'm looking forward to our rehearsal on July 18.

I've already played 3 jobs. It's been uncomfortable watching the crowds of people dancing and carrying on like normal --seems very unsafe to me. I have my mask around my neck at all times and stay away as much as possible when playing and on breaks. I play lots of casino showroom gigs, which are better because you're much farther away from the crowds than in clubs.

I am sure it is fun to get out and gig again but If you are playing indoors the mask should be on. I am definitely jonesing to play but, personally, I don't trust crowds of people to do the right thing especially once they have had a few drinks. I spoke to my bandmates this week and at this point none of them are interested in gigging or even going to see "socially distanced" music events. When it is safe to get out and play we will do so, sucks but that is the reality of the situation we find ourselves in.

Stay safe everyone!

The drummer in my original project is a jobber who plays with several bands at any given time. He had a gig recently as things loosen up here in Illinois. It did not go well. No distancing, no masks, poor security, and PEOPLE COMING UP ON THE STAGE! Sounded like a real disaster. He got in a little hot water after posting about the  debacle on Facebook and has since quit that particular band. I understand the need to get the economy moving again, but this thing is no joke, and we are NOT out of the woods yet. People's lack of attention span seems to have filed the virus as old news.

My son and I are driving from California to New York.  My mom is having some health issues and I don’t want to get on a plane or stay in a hotel these days, so we’re driving straight through with only one stopover at Cozmik and Mrs. Cowboy’s.  We left yesterday afternoon and are currently driving across Nebraska having only stopped for gas every 300-350 miles.   Other than some people working at the stations and other travelers, almost no one is wearing a mask.  Scary!

Cases in my state have more than doubled recently, with around 200 new ones per day. With the death a bit under 5%, doing the math is scary. Trusting our politicians to know what's best just doesn't seem reasonable anymore to me. I am now in the higher risk group and I am not playing out. I don't even practice in the 4 bands I was in.

Still driving through Nebraska, a state about which I have learned two things:

1.  Nebraska is VERY WIDE.  It might go on FOREVER!
2.  Apparently no one in Nebraska has heard of the Coronavirus!  We just got some strange looks while  wearing our masks at the gas station.

Nebraska! I have memories from many years ago! I once drove there from Wyoming and came across that huge lake they have. It got foggy and it was just like the beach! We used to get on from the train at 2am, when I was a kid, at N. Platte. Then the adults drove us to Broken Bow to see my step dad's relatives.  They used to hunt Pheasant by driving around cornfields in a car with loaded shotguns. Never got in trouble since his brother was the local sheriff. Used to visit his relatives at the Double S ranch up in the sand hills somewhere. As a kid it was such fun!

Tom -
Keep us updated on the Shank Hall gig.  It is a great venue and it would be fun to meet you in person... wearing a mask...

I do not understand the objection/ resistance to wearing of masks.  I wear a mask for you, and for those that you love, and my mother,  I am not wearing it for me.  I told a guy at work - it doesn't trouble me when I get strange looks (like at gas stations in the Northwoods), I have been laughed at my whole life.

What DOES trouble me is how people are associating safety protocol with political siding.... wearing a mask has NOTHING to do with politics.

Will do, and I'm with you on the masks. People have short attention spans. The pandemic is "old news" now. But we are not in the clear yet.

What’s with all this mask hysteria?   If anyone really needed to wear a mask, don’t you think the President would wear one as an example?   He knows all about this stuff - his uncle is a smart doctor!
