The 1/4 is a stereo jack, so if you use a regular mono guitar cable, you will only get sound from one pickup. I can mail a service sheet to you with instructions on how to rewire the jack to mono. Just email your mailing address to me
mica@alembic.com Until you change the 1/4 outpu to mono, you can use it directly with headphones.
Please note that the internal batteries will only last about 40 hours on this model. It's the primary reason Series I and II basses come with a power supply.
