Mark King
« on: April 07, 2020, 12:40:26 PM »
I, like many, am working from home. In my leisure time I found two Level 42 VHS tapes - sadly I took my VHS player up to the tip after youngest grand daughter posted a pencil into it years ago!!.
I found Fait Accompli and Live at Wembley on You Tube which I have enjoyed.
I have always been a Level 42 fan but never entered into slap style as totally in awe of those that do.  I have a Jaydee bass (sitting behind me alongside the Alembic Orion 4) made by John Diggins in 1986 - it is a back up as the Alembic is my bass that I use.
My share is that there are so many genius bass players- Jaco Pastorious, Victor Wootten, Stanley Clarke and the list goes on and on. Mark King is that little bit different in that he is a great player - not just slap but listen to his fingerstyle playing! BUT he is lead vocal with his band Level 42.
I read an article that he sees the bass playing and singing as a complete unit - WOW - when I have done backing vocals as well as playing bass, much preparation and concentration was needed.
I just feel the need to flag him up as an immense musician for those reasons and not to be overlooked in the bass playing world hall of fame.

ps. going to see them (40 years after starting up and he is 61) in Hull, UK in October this year, all being well!

That sounds like a great show to look forward to, Glenn. Yes, he has certainly set a high benchmark. I very much hope we can all return to some kind of entertainment out and about later this year.

Hi Murray, if you send me a private message. My dad has a Sony VHS to DVD copier/recorder and I might be able to transfer your videos to DVD so you can enjoy those Level 42 concerts.

That is very kind. The You Tube versions are pretty poor visually but I can't remember how clear the VHS were.  Sorry to be dim but how do I PM you?

I copied some VHS films to DVD on it years ago and the quality was ok. Not crystal clear but then VHS wasn't that high definition and I guess you lose some of the quality over time anyway. But we can give it a try and see.

Thanks - will do.
Are you going to see them next month?  We are going up to Hull to see them (ties in with our 50th wedding anniversary) - same seats as last year's cancelled concert.
