Things Get Even Weirder for the Tiger King
« on: April 04, 2020, 04:57:33 PM »
i suspect many have been watching Tiger King.   If you haven’t, check it out - the fascination of watching a train wreck in slow motion.  Anyway, I heard on the news this afternoon that Joe Exotic has coronavirus in prison in Texas.  We live in weird times.

Have avoided this show so far but am looking forward to Crazy Finger:The Untold Story of Jerry Garcia's Missing Digit... Netflix sure comes up with some weird ideas for shows.

I’m not familiar with Tiger King.  I’ve been watching the Hercules Poirot Series.  And the from Our Living Room performances.

Just watched The Ballad of Buster Scruggs on Netflix.

Very enjoyable, cameo appearance by Tom Waits.

Ballad Of Buster Scruggs is good - mayhap a tad dark here and there, but I'm down with dark.

Tiger King is a serious trip; that's some hardcore white trashing goin' on there! We did it in 2 nights; couldn't look away!

And I fear I have some connections:

First, they talk about the crazy redneck near Zanesville, OH, who turned all his critters loose & offed himself. Zanesville is 15 miles from my home town; my parents & brothers were "sheltering in place" during that.

Second, when they show the animal babies on (IIRC) Leno (might have been another late-night show), the cubs are brought on by Jack Hanna; he was a student of my dad's, and they have stayed in contact.

So, Bill - my take is that yes, she did it, yes, he did it, and yes, Jeff & James were in on it, too.  Your thoughts (or as much as possible while avoiding spoilers)?

Peter (who just got done with The Lost Room on Prime [all 6 episodes tonight]; pretty decent fictional weirdness to offset the real wackjobs in Tiger King, and a great cast)

I'm watching Turner Classic Movies.  'Citizen Kane' last night, right after 'The Searchers'.

The great thing about these old movies is you DON'T need surround sound, just a 'center channel' speaker:  They're mono.

True story; I cut the cable in June, 2007. I came home one day, and my 54 channels of basic cable were all messed up, I didn't even have a tv guide channel anymore to figure out what channel was what. When I called to ask what the ham-sammich was going on, they told me I had to upgrade from 'basic' to 'digital-plus' to get back to where I was. Nope... ain't happenin'. Mom says, I'd done got bowed-up in the back. Out where I live, choices are pretty limited. To get satellite reception they'd have to put up a 40-foot pole. (trees, mountains...) It's been old tv shows on DVD's, or better yet, just play an instrument for entertainment since then.

Doesn't sound like I've been missing much.  ;D

We’re watching lots of the old Rod Serling Twilight Zones and a series called Cash Cab - think Jeopardy on wheels as the taxi drives people around Manhattan.

Yes, Peter, I agree - she did it, he did it, they all did it!  The stuff with Carole really hit home with me.  Sounded eerily similar to a case I worked on when I was first starting out.  Google “Astarte Rice”.

Re; Tiger King.  I've never understood the attraction, whether the big constrictor snakes, big lizards, much less big cats, of WHY would I want a pet that could kill me at the drop of a hat.  Never understood this, never will.

Had a friend who was a zookeeper.  He explained one day, that even animals (dangerous or not) he'd raised since birth and been around every day of their lives would one day, guaranteed, hear the right sound, smell the right smell, be the right phase of the moon, whatever mysterious combination occurred, and turn on him.  Then go right back to being the animal he'd known until that moment.  That's why, he explained, they could never be pets, because one day, in spades, for a moment they would go back to being a wild animal.

That even goes for domestic pets - they are still animals.  A couple of years ago, our beloved cat “Cattabis ‘Indy’ Indica” got her tail wrapped up with the window blinds adjustment cord.  She freaked out, pulled the entire blinds assembly off the window and was running around the living room dragging the blinds behind her.  As I went to grab a large towel to throw over Indy, Senior Management reached out, gently speaking to the cat to calm her down.  Indy bit my wife.

On the other hand, there is a lot of misinformation out there.  For example, there are few, if any, constrictor snakes that can kill a healthy adult human.  Perhaps a 30 foot African Rock Python or a similar sized Anaconda, (both of which are VERY rare), but the typical boa or python is essentially harmless if you don’t freak out.

Cash Cab is a fun watch.  Used to watch it all the time when we had cable.
Office reruns are a big hit here.

If you're all on Netflix, there's never a bad time to re-watch the Starz Spartacus series.

Definitely different fare than I’m watching which is a combination of this year’s World Cup cross country ski and biathlon races (I’m too busy coaching skiers during the ski season to watch them at that time) and concert videos.

Know what's aggravating me?  We have, in the past, watched not only Dr. Who, (well, I watched it; She's not a fan) but also Justified and In Plain Sight on Prime, for free.  Now they want $1.99 per episode for all of them!  WTF, over?

We have, thus far, rewatched West Wing, and had a first go-around at, besides Tiger King, The Newsroom, Hunters, and - as mentioned above - The Lost Room, as well as the movie Passion Fish.  Also, a bunch of stand-up: Taylor Tomlinson, Quarter-Life Crisis, Mark Maron, End Times Fun, David A. Arnold, Fat Ballerina, Michelle Wolf, Joke Show, Tom Papa, You're Doing Great, and Bill Burr, Paper Tiger.  All are recommended.  Whadda ya got for me?

Peter (who will point out that, while he has both NetFlix & Prime, he does not have HBO, Showtime, or any such premium cable channels)
