He had been sick for a long time. Sad to see him pass but maybe for the better if he has been suffering. Now he is free to trade steel licks with Jerry...

Buddy’s work with Ian and Sylvia and the Great Speckled Bird was truly great. Trading licks with Amos Garrett and David Wilcox in the true spirit of country rock. Prior to NRPS.

I am unusual in that I was heavily into NRPS a fair time before I discovered the Dead; this is a hard blow.  He was a great talent - and, the one time I got to see them, I had a chnce to speak with him briefly; a really nice guy.

I was lucky enough to see the Riders with both Buddy and Jerry at the same time.   At the Keystone Berkeley in 1974.  Jerry jumped on stage with Alligator for the second set.  After the show I looked up from my table and Jerry was right there as he made his way through the crowd to the back of the club/greenroom.  I thanked him for all the great music and shook his hand.  Cage was a monster on the pedal steel.  Really gave the band a signature sound.  I had heard he wasn’t doing well.   At least now he is at peace.

My 3-song set at the open mic tomorrow night was going to be all Robert Earl Keene - I've changed my mind; it'll be "One Too Many Stories", "Last Lonely Eagle", and "Lonesome LA Cowboy".
