Just heard that tragic news from my drummer-buddy, Greg... who is quite the Peart disciple.  :'(

Kinda surprised at how this one hits deep for me.

I think reading his books (Ghost Rider in particular) contributes to my melancholy towards someone I never met in person.
He lived an adventurous life and shared a surprisingly deep insight to some of his inner thoughts exposing himself as a vulnerable human whilst simultaneously shunning mankind...

Nothing can stop you now Ghost Rider, you have found peace.

This one hits hard...I've been a fan since Hemispheres was a new album, so much of my life. I haven't read any of his books yet, but I will. I have always been amazed at how committed to mastery he was, I'm kind of a human crow so I have skill in many areas but an expert in few...Neil actually some years ago decided he needed to learn a whole new technique and went to a jazz teacher; that's like deciding to change to left-handed because you need a challenge!

he changed the musical landscape in his own way and inspired many, that is in all ways a good life and we should be thankful for that, thanks Neil.

It sad to hear this. So many people recognize Peart for his drummer but forget he was also the main lyricist for Rush.

That ^^^
Is what got me reading his books.  For me Red Barchetta’s lyrics paint such vivid scenery in my mind... when I found out that Neil was the lyricist AND he was a book writer - that was it.

Of course you never know someone via the media, from the outside looking in. And I can certainly understand his aversion to a lot of 'meet and greet' functions to avoid having to re-hash the death of his previous wife and their daughter. And a lot of times the truly gifted can be quite different emotionally than most folks. So my wish is that despite how it seemed from out here that he really understood just how much he was revered and appreciated, and he got some enjoyment and affirmation from it.

I often tend to lump drummers into either 'feel' or 'technique', but Neil was both, a ferociously driven time feel with buckets of ornaments to follow Geddy or Alex into and out of corners. As with Entwistle and Moon, I often wondered how Geddy could lock with the onslaught behind him, play terrifying lines at the same time, AND sing as well. Giants . . . . . .

Death is no respector of fame, fortune, or anything else, and when it's your turn, he's come for you. You can only hope that you left behind things where people will remember you fondly, and he certainly did, and will be proven in a terrible way that there wasn't another like him. NP was a 'one of one'.

We shall miss him.

I'm absorbing this loss slowly - several of my friends are really taking it hard. As a bassist I was always focused on Geddy so I think that's why it's not hitting too hard, but I have my moments. I'm glad he got a few years of retirement, though tragic that it was so short. I hope he's jamming with Chris Squire and others now, or riding his motorcycle through the spaceways with his daughter.

No Alembic content but here's a pic from the R40 tour that I took that managed to capture the doubleneck and Mr. Peart on the big screen.

Sad to know that he was suffering, and that he's passed. I remember seeing my brother suffering from brain cancer and I know it's terrible. Very sad.

I was devastated by the news. It was such a shock. It hit me harder than I would have expected, which made me realize just how important his lyrics were to me. Just copying a couple of my facebook posts here...

Tuesday the world lost one of the greatest drummers who ever lived. But for me, it was his lyrics that meant the most. They gave validity to my feelings about freedom of thought and expression as a teenager. His observations and social commentary, often using fantasy characters as metaphors, just made complete sense to me. This one may be worse than Squire or Wetton (And that's saying a LOT). Farewell to the King!

Up until yesterday, I guess I sort of took for granted how much Neil's lyrics meant to me. Coming out of a rough patch in my family's history, and a 2 year period of constantly being "the new kid", I started high school and got turned on to this crazy band out of Canada that seemed to speak directly to me and who I was. Rest in peace Neil, you made the world a better place for millions of people like me.

I really haven't posted anywhere about this, as it was such a shock to me as well. Rush was one of the main reasons I chose to be a musician, because they were one of the first bands that I felt offered really intelligent, thought-provoking lyrics along with complex (and lengthy!) arrangements. Neil's lyrics were always worth opening the record sleeve for (okay, showing my age) and pondering what he was talking about.

"suddenly you were gone, from all the lives you left your mark upon"
RIP Professor...
